Organo-bismuth compounds S 5400Effect of π-Accepting Substituent on the Reactivity and Spectroscopic Characteristics of Triarylbismuthanes and Triarylbismuth Dihalides. -The electronic effect of p-substituents on the oxidative chlorination of triarylbismuthanes to form bismuth dichlorides (II) is studied by competitive reactions against triphenylbismuthane. With increasing electron-withdrawing ability of the p-substituents, the relative ratio of p-substituted triarylbismuth dichloride (IIa) or (IIc)-(IIg) to triphenylbismuth dichloride (IIb) decreases. Palladium-catalyzed degradation of dichlorides (II) and their difluorides (III) yields biaryls (IV). In the presence of Pd(OAc)2, (II) give (IV) quickly and in good yields. By use of Pd(PPh3)4 catalyst, with increasing electron-withdrawing nature of the substituents, the reactivity increases and such tendency is more remarkable for (II) than for difluorides (III). -(RAHMAN, A. scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
