A literature review of finite element analysis (FEA) studies of dental implants with their model validation process was performed to establish the criteria for evaluating validation methods with respect to their similarity to biological behavior. An electronic literature search of PubMed was conducted up to January 2017 using the Medical Subject Headings “dental implants” and “finite element analysis.” After accessing the full texts, the context of each article was searched using the words “valid” and “validation” and articles in which these words appeared were read to determine whether they met the inclusion criteria for the review. Of 601 articles published from 1997 to 2016, 48 that met the eligibility criteria were selected. The articles were categorized according to their validation method as follows: in vivo experiments in humans (n = 1) and other animals (n = 3), model experiments (n = 32), others’ clinical data and past literature (n = 9), and other software (n = 2). Validation techniques with a high level of sufficiency and efficiency are still rare in FEA studies of dental implants. High-level validation, especially using in vivo experiments tied to an accurate finite element method, needs to become an established part of FEA studies. The recognition of a validation process should be considered when judging the practicality of an FEA study.
The bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) technique is commonly used to correct mandibular deficiency. If the patient is exposed to excessive external forces after the procedure, occlusal changes or nonunion may occur. However, previous studies only focused on single external forces on the mandible and did not conduct relevant research on the forces exerted by different occlusion conditions. The main purpose of this study was to use finite element analysis methods to determine the biomechanics of four common occlusion conditions after BSSO surgical treatment. This study constructed a finite element analysis computer model of a miniplate implanted in the lower jaw. The structure of the model consisted of the mandible, miniplate, and screws. In addition, external forces were applied to the superficial masseter, deep masseter, medial pterygoid, anterior temporalis, middle temporalis, and posterior temporalis muscles to simulate the incisal clench, intercuspal position (ICP), right unilateral molar clench (RMOL), and right group function occlusion conditions. Subsequently, this study observed the effects of these conditions on the miniplate, screws, and mandible, including the von Mises stress values. The results showed that all of the different occlusion conditions that this study evaluated placed high stress on the miniplate. In the ICP and RMOL occlusion conditions, the overall mandibular structure experienced very high stress. The screw on the proximal segment near the bone gap experienced high stress, as did the screw on the buccal side. According to the present analysis, although the data were not directly obtained from clinical practice, the finite element analysis could evaluate the trend of results under different external forces. The result of this study recommended that patients without intermaxillary fixation avoid the ICP and RMOL occlusion conditions. It can be used as a pilot study in the future for providing clinicians more information on the biomechanics of implantation.
In this study, a data processing based on the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) of Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) is developed at Chung-Li VHF radar to identify and remove the aircraft clutter for improving the atmospheric wind measurement. The EMD decomposes the echo signals into the so-called intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) in the time domain, and then the aircraft clutter that is represented by a number of specific IMFs can be identified in the radar returns and separated from the clear air echoes that are observed concurrently by the VHF radar. The identified clutter is validated by using the aircraft information collected by the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) receiver. It shows that the proposed algorithm can detect the aircraft echoes that are mixed with the clear air echoes. After implementing the algorithm on the experimental data, the atmospheric horizontal wind velocities are estimated after the aircraft clutter is removed. In order to evaluate the degree of the improvement of the horizontal wind measurement, a comparison in the horizontal wind velocities between Chung-Li VHF radar and a co-located UHF wind profiler radar is made. The results show that the use of EMD and the proposed data processing can effectively reduce the uncertainty and substantially improve the precision and reliability of the horizontal wind measurement.
