This paper describes family therapy for behavioural problems in a parenting support agency. It discusses the literature on the effectiveness of family therapy with child behaviour problems within a community support environment. The paper presents a detailed family case study, which is discussed from an integrative family therapy framework. Narrative therapy is used as an overarching framework for integrating systemic therapy and parenting skills to help a family with a mixed cultural Aboriginal and Australian background. This allows sessions that are meaningful for the family and encourages a connection to their own resources and to their community, besides creating a safe space for a dialogue that hears and values all voices. Keywords: parenting, child behaviour problems, narrative therapy, family therapy, integrative, Aboriginal Key Points1 Supporting families in building connections to their own resources and within their communities can generate hope, even after long periods of demoralisation. 2 The therapist's decentred yet influential position creates an open space for a collaborative dialogue that welcomes, hears and values all voices. 3 Inviting practitioners to position themselves as witnesses to families' experiences helps to address the power imbalance inherent in professional-client relationships. 4 By taking a flexible and integrative approach in working with families, the therapist can create meaningful engagement and a space for change. 5 Integrating systemic and narrative approaches can create a tailored approach for families presenting with child behavioural problems in a parenting support agency.
