Abstract.A generalized FOR statement which includes multiple control variables was found to be a very powerful tool at the source program level for writing efficient FOR loops. This design of a generalized FOR statement grew out of a requirement to design a language that could be translated into efficient code with (almost) no optimizations done by its compiler.

In a similar fashion to the partitioning of the integers into residue classes, integer spaces (finitely generated free Z-modules) can be partitioned into complete or incomplete vector congruence classes.

SUhWMRYA linear tree structure is considered for the internal representation of programs executed by interpreters. T h i s representation is appropriate when one wishes to have an internal representation preserving the high level structures o f the source language. The linear tree structure facilitates a simple mechanism for interpretation control in the context of high level control structures.
