Many life circumstances such as physical health, income and social support, may decline in later adulthood, older adults who are higher in emotional intelligence may adjust their life goals and use more effective emotion regulation strategies, such as cognitive reappraisal, to enhance their life and their affective well-being. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between the emotional intelligence, social support and mental health of institutionalized elderly. Design: A correlational descriptive design was used. Setting: The study was conducted at Dar-El Saada geriatric home in Tanta city. Subjects: selected only 54 older adults who were passed by cognitive impairment test. Three tools used for this study: tool I: Emotional intelligence scale, tool II: Multidimensional perceived social support, tool III: General Health Questionnaire 28 item. Result: The results of this study showed that the majority of the studied subjects had low emotional intelligence.And there was low percentage of subjects (83.3%) had low social support levels. Also it was found that two thirds of the studied subjects had poorer mental health. Conclusions: The results concluded that there was a significant positive relation between emotional intelligence and social support. The study also found negative relation between emotional intelligence and poor mental health, also the study found a significant negative relation between mental health of elderly and their level of perceived social support. Recommendation: Future researches are needed to find out exactly how older adults with higher emotional intelligence cope with the changing life circumstances to maximize their well-being.
Early-stage schizophrenia patients are already more prone to feel inadequate, and less aware of their own aims and assertive conduct. They are also more likely to feel pessimistic about the future. The study aimed to explore the relation of assertive behavior, hope feeling, and recovery for patients with schizophrenia. Design: a correlational descriptive research design was used. Study subjects: A convenience sample of 100 patients involved in the study. Three tools were used: Tool I part1: A structured interview schedule include socio-demographic & clinical characteristics of patients. part2: Assertiveness inventory. Tool II: The Herth Hope Index 12 items (HHI). Tool III: The Recovery Assessment Scale (RAS). The result; Most of patients have low total recovery levels, two thirds of them have a little assertiveness level and majority of them have higher hope level. Conclusion: Hope levels and recovery have an extremely negative statistically significant correlation and there is no statistically significant link between a patient's assertiveness and recovery level. The study recommended that all psychotic patients in hospitals should participate in an assertiveness skill training program.
Self-empowerment in schizophrenia may be associated with symptoms and social functioning. It is possible that being disempowered may adversely affect one's level of functioning and that improvements in self-empowerment were associated with overall severity of symptoms and improvement of social functioning. Aim of the study: to determine the relation between selfempowerment and social function among patients with schizophrenia. Subject: A convenient sample of 130 patients with schizophrenia from both inpatient and outpatient services of Neuropsychiatric Department of Tanta University Hospital. Study design: A descriptive correlation research design was utilized. Study tools: four tools were used: Tool 1 is Structured interview, Tool 2 is " Positive and negative syndrome scales, Tool 3 is The Empowerment Scale, and Tool 4 is Social Function Scale. Results: This study revealed that more than half of the studied patients had low sense of self-empowerment, one third of patients had moderate sense of self-empowerment, and the minority had high sense of self-empowerment. Conclusions: it can be concluded that, there was a highly positive statistical significant correlation between total self-empowerment level and total social functioning level, while there was highly negative statistical significant correlation between total self-empowerment level and total Positive & negative syndrome level, and there was a highly negative statistical significant correlation between social functioning level and total positive & negative syndrome level. Recommendations: Further research on developing programs that are needed for a better understanding of relations between schizophrenia, empowerment and social functioning to improve social functions and self-empowerment levels of patients with schizophrenia.
Negative symptoms in schizophrenia are commonly associated with reductions and difficulties in patients' social skills. Fortunately, many psychosocial interventions recommended for their improvement. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of social skills enhancement training program on negative symptoms among patients with schizophrenia. Subjects: a convenience sample of 60 patients with schizophrenia who attended both inpatient department and the outpatient clinic, of department of neuropsychiatry Tanta University hospital. Study design: Quasi-experimental research design was utilized. Settings: department of neuropsychiatry Tanta University Hospital. Study tools: Two tools were used: tool 1 is "Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS)" and Tool 2 is "Social skills assessment screening scale". Results: there were reductions in the mean scores of negative symptoms domains and a significant increase in the mean scores of social skills domains, immediately and at one month after the program in comparison with before. There was a highly statistical significant negative correlation between levels of social skills and levels of negative symptoms Conclusions: it can be concluded that, the social skills enhancement training program was effective for patients with schizophrenia and brought a significant decrease in the severity of negative symptoms, and an improvement in their social skills in comparison to before the program. Recommendations: the researcher recommended that social skills training program should be integrated in the psychiatric hospitals" protocol of care in conjunction with pharmacological therapy for going beyond the traditional treatment process of patients with schizophrenia.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is one of the most prevalent behavioral disorders affecting children and adolescent worldwide. It causes a grave problem to child, teacher and family. The study aimed to evaluate the effect of educational program about Attention Deficit Hyper Activity Disorder on primary schools teacher's knowledge and skill. This study was conducted at two governmental primary schools at Elgharbia Governorates (one urban and another rural), the subject of the study were 50 primary school teachers. This study followed a quasi-experimental design. Two tools were used for the data collection, Tool 1 include : part a: Socio-demographic data, : part b: Knowledge of Attention Deficit hyper activity Disorders Scale (KADDS) to assess teachers' knowledge about ADHD, Tool 2 include : Teacher Intervention Survey to determine teachers skills regarding interventions that a teacher can use with students with a DHD.. The study program included 4 sessions for six months. The designed educational program helped teachers through providing efficient knowledge and skill regarding ADHD. The results revealed that the designed program had an effective impact on teachers' knowledge and skill regarding ADHD as there was a statistically significant difference between total score of knowledge and skill before implementing the program, immediately after and at follow up .The study concluded that educational program about ADHD can improve level of teacher's knowledge and skills about ADHD. According to these results, the researcher recommended that teachers should be offered in-service training in ADHD, as well as behavioral management and academic interventions (curriculum adaptations) regarding ADHD.
