Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is a major crop plant and a model system for fruit development. Solanum is one of the largest angiosperm genera(1) and includes annual and perennial plants from diverse habitats. Here we present a high-quality genome sequence of domesticated tomato, a draft sequence of its closest wild relative, Solanum pimpinellifolium(2), and compare them to each other and to the potato genome (Solanum tuberosum). The two tomato genomes show only 0.6% nucleotide divergence and signs of recent admixture, but show more than 8% divergence from potato, with nine large and several smaller inversions. In contrast to Arabidopsis, but similar to soybean, tomato and potato small RNAs map predominantly to gene-rich chromosomal regions, including gene promoters. The Solanum lineage has experienced two consecutive genome triplications: one that is ancient and shared with rosids, and a more recent one. These triplications set the stage for the neofunctionalization of genes controlling fruit characteristics, such as colour and fleshiness
A total of 49 patients with hemorrhagic fever caused by HYSV were included; 8 (16.3%) patients died. A fatal outcome was associated with high viral RNA load in blood at admission, as well as higher serum liver transaminase levels, more pronounced coagulation disturbances (activated partial thromboplastin time, thrombin time), and higher levels of acute phase proteins (phospholipase A, fibrinogen, hepcidin), cytokines (interleukin [IL]-6, IL-10, interferon-γ), and chemokines (IL-8, monocyte chemotactic protein 1, macrophage inflammatory protein 1b). The levels of these host parameters correlated with viral RNA levels. Blood viral RNA levels gradually declined over 3-4 weeks after illness onset, accompanied by resolution of symptoms and laboratory abnormalities. Viral RNA was also detectable in throat, urine, and fecal specimens of a substantial proportion of patients, including all fatal cases assayed. CONCLUSIONS. Viral replication and host immune responses play an important role in determining the severity and clinical outcome in patients with infection by HYSV.
Objective. To elucidate the mechanism of the development of T cell infiltrates in the salivary glands of patients with Sjögren's syndrome (SS), we studied T cell-attracting chemokines and their receptors.Methods. The expression of the T cell-attracting chemokines, interferon-␥ (IFN␥)-inducible 10-kd protein (IP-10; also called CXCL10), monokine induced by IFN␥ (Mig; also called CXCL9), and stromal cellderived factor 1 (SDF-1; also called CXCL12), in salivary glands from SS patients was investigated by polymerase chain reaction-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Cells that produce chemokines and lymphocytes that express chemokine receptors were identified by immunohistochemistry. The production of IP-10 and Mig proteins by salivary epithelial cells in response to IFN␥ was determined by ELISA.Results. Expression of IP-10 and Mig messenger RNA (mRNA) was significantly up-regulated in SS salivary glands compared with normal salivary glands (both P < 0.01). There was no significant difference in SDF-1 mRNA expression between the SS and normal salivary glands. IP-10 and Mig proteins were predominantly expressed in the ductal epithelium adjacent to lymphoid infiltrates. Most of the CD3؉ infiltrating lymphocytes in dense periductal foci expressed CXCR3, the receptor for IP-10 and Mig. IFN␥ induced the production of high levels of IP-10 and Mig proteins from cultured SS salivary epithelial cells.Conclusion. These findings suggest that IFN␥ stimulates the production of IP-10 and Mig in the SS ductal epithelium, and that IP-10 and Mig are involved in the accumulation of T cell infiltrates in the SS salivary gland. Chemokines or chemokine receptors could be a rational new therapeutic target in SS.
The interactions of ethylene glycol with a partially reduced rutile TiO2(110) surface have been studied using temperature programmed desorption (TPD). The saturation coverage on surface Ti rows is determined to be 0.43 monolayer (ML), slightly less than one ethylene glycol per two Ti sites. Most of the adsorbed ethylene glycol (∼80%) undergoes further reactions to yield other products. Two major channels are observed, dehydration yielding ethylene and water and dehydrogenation yielding acetaldehyde and hydrogen. Hydrogen formation is rather surprising as it has not been observed previously on TiO2(110) from simple organic molecules. The coverage dependent yields of ethylene and acetaldehyde correlate well with those of water and hydrogen, respectively. Dehydration dominates at lower ethylene glycol coverages (<0.2 ML) and plateaus as the coverage is increased to saturation. Dehydrogenation is observed primarily at higher ethylene glycol coverages (>0.2 ML). Our results suggest that the observed dehydration and dehydrogenation reactions proceed via different surface intermediates.
