Cutting parameter optimization dramatically affects the production time, cost, profit rate, and the quality of the final products, in milling operations. Aiming to select the optimum machining parameters in multitool milling operations such as corner milling, face milling, pocket milling, and slot milling, this paper presents a novel version of TLBO, TLBO with dynamic assignment learning strategy (DATLBO), in which all the learners are divided into three categories based on their results in “Learner Phase”: good learners, moderate learners, and poor ones. Good learners are self-motivated and try to learn by themselves; each moderate learner uses a probabilistic approach to select one of good learners to learn; each poor learner also uses a probabilistic approach to select several moderate learners to learn. The CEC2005 contest benchmark problems are first used to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Finally, the DATLBO algorithm is applied to a multitool milling process based on maximum profit rate criterion with five practical technological constraints. The unit time, unit cost, and profit rate from the Handbook (HB), Feasible Direction (FD) method, Genetic Algorithm (GA) method, five other TLBO variants, and DATLBO are compared, illustrating that the proposed approach is more effective than HB, FD, GA, and five other TLBO variants.
Teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO) algorithm is a novel heuristic method which simulates the teaching-learning phenomenon of a classroom. However, in the later period of evolution of the TLBO algorithm, the lower exploitation ability and the smaller scope of solutions led to the poor results. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel version of TLBO that is augmented with error correction strategy and Cauchy distribution (ECTLBO) in which Cauchy distribution is utilized to expand the searching space and error correction to avoid detours to achieve more accurate solutions. The experimental results verify that the ECTLBO algorithm has overall better performance than various versions of TLBO and is very competitive with respect to other nine original intelligence optimization algorithms. Finally, the ECTLBO algorithm is also applied to path planning of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), and the promising results show the applicability of the ECTLBO algorithm for problem-solving.
Abstract. The Teaching-Learning-Based Optimization (TLBO) algorithm is a novel heuristic method that is inspired by the philosophy of teaching and learning in a class. In the "Teacher Phase" of the original TLBO algorithm, all learners are combined in one group and learn only from the teacher, which quickly leads to declining population diversity. Utilizing fuzzy K-means clustering to objectively divide all learners into smaller-sized groups more closely conforms to the modern idea of intra-class grouping for teaching and learning. Furthermore, fuzzy K-means clustering can objectively divide learners as nearly as possible according to their interests and abilities, which helps each learner to grow to his or her fullest extent. This paper presents a novel version of TLBO, TLBO with a Fuzzy Grouping Learning Strategy (FGTLBO), in which fuzzy K-means clustering is used to create K centers, each of which acts as the mean of its corresponding group. Performance and accuracy of the FGTLBO algorithm are examined on CEC2005 standard benchmark functions, and these results are compared with various other versions of TLBO. The experimental results verify that the FGTLBO algorithm is very competitive in terms of solution quality and convergence rate.
In order to address the shortcomings of the traditional bidirectional RRT* algorithm, such as its high degree of randomness, low search efficiency, and the many inflection points in the planned path, we institute improvements in the following directions. Firstly, to address the problem of the high degree of randomness in the process of random tree expansion, the expansion direction of the random tree growing at the starting point is constrained by the improved artificial potential field method; thus, the random tree grows towards the target point. Secondly, the random tree sampling point grown at the target point is biased to the random number sampling point grown at the starting point. Finally, the path planned by the improved bidirectional RRT* algorithm is optimized by extracting key points. Simulation experiments show that compared with the traditional A*, the traditional RRT, and the traditional bidirectional RRT*, the improved bidirectional RRT* algorithm has a shorter path length, higher path-planning efficiency, and fewer inflection points. The optimized path is segmented using the dynamic window method according to the key points. The path planned by the fusion algorithm in a complex environment is smoother and allows for excellent avoidance of temporary obstacles.
