We study the Q-factors of whispering gallery modes on the surface of standard optical fibers using both spectral and ring-down measurements and show that annealing by the fire torch yields Q-factors higher than 10 7 . In this case, however, variations of the effective radius are introduced, that make the mode spectrum complicated as a number of modes with a nonzero axial component of the wave vector appear. We demonstrate that tapering the fiber sample allows to evade this complexity and to build up an efficient filter operating in transmission.
The basic principle of quantum mechanics guarantee the unconditional security of quantum key distribution (QKD) at the cost of inability of amplification of quantum state. As a result, despite remarkable progress in worldwide metropolitan QKD networks over the past decades, long haul fiber QKD network without trustful relay has not been achieved yet. Here, through sending-or-not-sending (SNS) protocol, we complete a twin field QKD (TF-QKD) and distribute secure keys without any trusted repeater over a 511 km long haul fiber trunk linking two distant metropolitans. Our secure key rate is around 3 orders of magnitudes greater than what is expected if the previous QKD field test system over the same length were applied. The efficient quantum-state transmission and stable single-photon interference over such a long distance deployed fiber paves the way to large-scale fiber quantum networks.
The new manufacturing method for fabrication of Surface Nanoscale Axial Photonics (SNAP) structures has been developed. We showed experimentally that the bent fiber can achieve the nanometer-scale variation in the effective fiber radius sufficient for fabrication of SNAP microresonators. The advantage of the demonstrated method is in its simplicity, robustness, and mechanical tunability of the fabricated devices.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
