This study investigates the psychological well-being of single mothers and its relationship with resilience, coping strategies, and stress. This study also aimed to identify factors that could predict the psychological well-being of single mothers. This study was participated in by 328 single mothers in Terengganu. This study's questionnaires involve various instruments, such as the Ryff Psychological Well-Being Scale, the Connor-Davidson Resilience, Coping Strategies Inventory, and the Perceived Stress. The findings showed a modest level of psychological well-being among single mothers. Also, this study found that they have high levels of resilience, coping strategies, and stress. Meanwhile, regression analysis showed that resilience, coping strategies, and stress were predictors of psychological well-being among single mothers. Therefore, the findings of this study are expected to be the starting point for further studies on the empowerment of single mothers.
Life map sketch is a unique technique of an expressive therapy that can be used in the process of emotional healing for clients. The purpose of this study was to explore the life experiences of teenage girls engaged in delinquent behaviour using life map sketch. Seven teenage girls from one approved school in Malaysia were selected in this study using purposive sampling. The result showed that there were some themes identified from the teenage girls delinquent sharing of life experience in this study. The themes were hardship, expression of emotion, negative behavior, meaning behind the sketch and hopeful. The use of life map sketch's technique help the participants in expressing their latent issues that they found hard to express orally. Therefore, this technique is very promising in improving the counseling services in Malaysia.
Dilahirkan sebagai Orang Kurang Upaya (OKU), mengalami kurang upaya akibat serangan penyakit dan kehilangan anggota badan akibat kemalangan merupakan mimpi ngeri kepada sesiapa sahaja yang mengalaminya. Individu yang terpaksa melalui situasi ini akan mengalami perasaan putus asa kerana kesukaran untuk bergerak dan tidak berupaya melaksanakan tugasan harian dengan sempurna. Mereka akan menunjukkan tingkah laku dan gangguan emosi yang tidak stabil seperti terkejut, cemas, murung, marah, penyesuaian serta mengalami perubahan signifikan dalam perhubungansosial. Kesan seterusnya akan membawa kepada trauma dalam kehidupan harian mereka. Trauma yang dialami oleh OKU fizikal akibat sesuatu kemalangan didapati boleh mendatangkan kesan yang sangat mendalam. Sehubungan itu, kajian ini dijalankan untuk mengenal pasti bagaimana OKU fizikal akibat kemalangan mengawal dan mengatasi trauma apabila menghadapi krisis sebagai OKU. Oleh itu, pendekatan kaunseling pemulihan secara berkelompok telah digunakan bertujuan membantu OKUmengenal pasti faktorpenyumbang kepada kebangkitan semula selepas mengalami kurang upaya fizikal akibat kemalangan. Kajian ini telah menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif terhadap 11 orang OKU fizikal akibat kemalangan. Kaedah ini sangat berkesan dalam membantu subjek menghuraikan secara mendalam pengalaman menghadapi krisis sebagai OKU dan langkah yang dilakukan untuk mengawal serta mengatasi trauma melalui luahan perkongsian, pendedahan kendiri dan perkembangan diri. Hasil kajian mendapati terdapat dua faktor utama iaitu dalaman dan luaran yang menjadi penyumbang kepada mengawal dan mengatasi trauma kesan daripada kehilangan anggota badan.Faktor dalaman melibatkan diri subjek sendiri manakala faktor luaran terbahagi kepada empat sub tema iaitu keluarga, ibu bapa, rakan dan masyarakat. Implikasi kajian menunjukkan individu yang mengalami kurang upaya fizikal sangat memerlukan perkhidmatan sokongan yang dapat membantu mereka untuk kembali pulih daripada krisis kehilangan anggota badan dan perasaan trauma tersebut.Kata kunci: OKU, kemalangan, trauma, krisis, upaya fizikal
Purpose: The aim of this study is to see the effectiveness of the use of Art Therapy Module (ATM) on the well-being of single mothers. Methodology: Experimental quasi methods involving pre-test and post-test were used. A total of 40 respondents were involved in this study and divided into four groups consisting of ten respondents. This ATM was conducted through a five-week counseling session. Collection of study data was done by using Single Mothers Welfare Instrument to measure stress, resilience, mobility and well-being before and after therapy. Main Finding: The findings depicted a decrease in stress levels, increased resilience, coping and well-being. Hypothesis testing showed that there was a significant difference between pre-test and post-test on the well-being of single mothers in terms of stress, resilience and coping. Application: The findings showed that ATM is effective in helping single mothers to respond to stress, enhance resilience and coping skills to improve their well-being and quality of life. Novelty/Originality: ATM module also contributes to the development of knowledge in the field of counseling, particularly in treatment options offered by counselors for clients such as single mothers.
Single mothers must play double roles as mothers and the head of the family. They must deal with many challenges to survive. Thus, this study aims to investigate the effect of coping strategies, and resilience on stress among single mothers in Terengganu, Malaysia. This quantitative study involved 328 single mothers in the Kuala Nerus of Terengganu. The data was collected purposively through surveys questionnaire. This study found that resilience has a negative and significant effect on stress. Besides that, the coping strategies (e.g., problem-centred behavior and avoidant behavior) have a significant effect on single mother stress. Social-supported behavior and emotion-centred behavior do not have a significant effect on stress. In conclusion, this study has identified the level of coping strategies, resilience, and stress. Also, the authors indicated that resilience has negative effects and coping strategies (e.g., problem-centred behavior and avoidant behavior) have positively affected single mothers' stress in Terengganu, Malaysia. A few recommendations were proposed based on the findings.
