Journalism is about much more than just seeking and processing information. Multi-skilled journalists of the twenty-first century have to fulfil the given basic tasks and invest much of their time in verifying the affairs that are presented, and uncovering half-truths or false information. That is why all truly professional editorial offices pay attention to demasking, denying, or explaining disinformation in order to monitor and properly check the publishing activities of other media subjects. The chapter is focused on so-called debunking, a method of identifying disinformation, or rather a media genre that is associated with investigative journalism. The present study therefore aims to further explain why nowadays more and more media recipients express their trust in disinformation or various conspiracy theories. The outlined theoretical frameworks are followed by a discourse analysis in which the authors reflect on the current strategies of debunking applied by selected online news media. The text’s contribution to the contemporary scholarly discussions on journalism thus lies in defining various journalistic strategies associated with debunking, i.e., publicly uncovering false information that is disseminated in order to influence or rather manipulate the whole of society or at least its major parts.
The submitted study addresses the topic of the current state of the opinion journalism and its genres in the Slovak periodical press. The author draws attention to the question of classification of the opinion journalism of a rational and emotional type from the genre categorization point of view and, simultaneously, reflects on its application in the present journalistic practice. This brings a certain rate of confrontation between the defined theoretical premises and their subsequent practical (non-)implementation. The main objective of the study is to clarify the presence of genres of analytical and literary opinion journalism stated by media theory in the environment of the Slovak periodicals. Presentation of the basic terminological axis and the related explication of journalism genres included in the opinion journalism constitute the secondary objectives of the paper. For the purposes of achieving the set objectives, the author uses methods of logical analysis of text in combination with discourse analysis. Similarly, she predicts the evident presence of the phenomenon of hybridization in the Slovak journalistic practice.
The presented study closely explains R. Caillois’ theory of game principles, while attempt- ing to point out its apparent application in the digital dimension. It is our main intention to clarify the significance and topicality of the characteristics of individual game categories within media products – digital games. Thus, confrontation between the fundamental theoretical framework and its consequent practical application within the selected case study occurs in the submitted scientific text. The study’s ambition is to identify the indicative characteristics of R. Caillois’ game categories in the selected media product – the digital game Sudden Strike 4. The chosen research material can be qualified as a suitable representative of the strategy game genre, which was the direct determinant of our selection. Therefore, the primary objective of the study is to ascertain the possible application of R. Caillois’ game theory in the strategy game genre. For the purposes of achieving the defined objective, the author uses methods of logical analysis of text in combination with qualitative content (narrative) analysis. She thus presumes a certain increase and revaluation of the existing scientific knowledge necessary for both the theory and practice.
