Coherent properties of the x-ray beam delivered at the ESRF allow the observation of very weak perturbations of the wave front, resulting in the phase contrast. A straightforward experimental setup for phase contrast imaging is proposed and used to record holographic images from organic samples of 10-100 pm at energy lo-50 keV with the contrast up to 50%-100%. The theory of phase contrast imaging is considered and some theoretical estimations are made to reveal the performance of the proposed technique in terms of resolution, sensitivity, geometrical requirements, and ehergy range applicability. It is found that for carbon-based fibers a detectable size with 2% contrast is 0.1 ,um for 10 keV and-1 pm for 100 keV, It is demonstrated that the fine interference structure of the image is very sensitive to the shape, density variation, and internal structure of the sample. Some prospects for the practical use and future development of the new coherent techniques such as phase contrast microscopy, microtomography, holography, and interferometry at high energies are also discussed. 0 I995 American Institute of Physics.
High-temperature superconductors (HTS) promise to revolutionize high-power applications like wind generators, DC power cables, particle accelerators, and fusion energy devices. A practical HTS cable must not degrade under severe mechanical, electrical, and thermal conditions; have simple, low-resistance, and manufacturable electrical joints; high thermal stability; and rapid detection of thermal runaway quench events. We have designed and experimentally qualified a Vacuum Pressure Impregnated, Insulated, Partially transposed, Extruded, and Roll-formed (VIPER) cable that simultaneously satisfies all of these requirements for the first time. VIPER cable critical currents are stable over thousands of mechanical cycles at extreme electromechanical force levels, multiple cryogenic thermal cycles, and dozens of quench-like transient events. Electrical joints between VIPER cables are simple, robust, and demountable. Two independent, integrated fiber-optic quench detectors outperform standard quench detection approaches. VIPER cable represents a key milestone in next-step energy generation and transmission technologies and in the maturity of high-temperature superconductors as a technology.
Silicon refractive planar parabolic lenses with minimized absorption were fabricated by a combination of photolithography and dry-etching techniques. Focusing and spectral properties of the lenses were studied with synchrotron radiation in the energy range 8–25 keV at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. A focal spot of 1.8 μm with a gain of 18.5 and transmission of more then 80% was measured at 15.6 keV. The spectral characteristics were analyzed taking into account material dispersion and photon-energy attenuation in the hard x-ray range.
We report a novel type of x-ray interferometer employing a bilens system consisting of two parallel compound refractive lenses, each of which creates a diffraction limited beam under coherent illumination. By closely overlapping such coherent beams, an interference field with a fringe spacing ranging from tens of nanometers to tens of micrometers is produced. In an experiment performed with 12 keV x rays, submicron fringes were observed by scanning and moiré imaging of the test grid. The far field interference pattern was used to characterize the x-ray coherence. Our technique opens up new opportunities for studying natural and man-made nanoscale materials.
