The current study aimed at investigating the highly needed oral communication functions in the engineering workplace. The study adopted a mixed-methods exploratory applied design. It involved 90 Egyptian engineers employed in several engineering fields around the world. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected through the participants' responses to a questionnaire that includes both close-ended and open-ended questions. The results indicated that both addressing audiences and understanding an interlocutor are the most required functions in the engineering workplace, followed by sustained monologue, formal discussion (meetings), and goaloriented co-operation. The findings would empower ESP course designers to create customized courses on the basis of current authentic oral communication needs of Egyptian engineers.
