In this study, we developed a Japanese version of the Professional Quality of Life Scale for Nurses (ProQOL-JN). The scale was designed to evaluate the quality of life of people working as health care professionals and involves three subscales: compassion fatigue/secondary traumatic stress, compassion satisfaction, and burnout. The scale's reliability and validity were examined using data from 618 Japanese nurses. The results indicated that this scale had three component structures; furthermore, a test-retest correlation and an internal consistency indicated that the scale had high reliability. Correlations with the Impact of Event Scale-Revised, the Japanese version of the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, and the Japanese version of the Burnout Inventory were mostly consistent with the current theory of professional quality of life, which supports the high validity of the ProQOL-JN. These results indicated that the scale has the required reliability and validity to measure nurses' quality of life.
The purpose of this study was to develop pilot evaluation of psychometric property of the CoachAthlete Relationship Maintenance Questionnaire (CARM-Q) in Japanese junior tennis players and to examine its reliability and validity. The athlete version of CARM-Q was administered to 240 Japanese junior tennis players with a mean age of 15.7 1.3 years. Results of a confirmatory factor analysis replicated the factor structure found in the original version of the CARM-Q (Rhind and Jowett, 2012).Furthermore, it was suggested that the athlete version of CARM-Q had sufficient reliability and validity. The effects of the combination pattern of the coach-athlete dyad (athlete male / coach male, athlete male / coach female, athlete female / coach male, and athlete female / coach female) were tested via MANOVA using 7 subscales from the CARM-Q. Results revealed that the athlete male / coach female group was higher in Conflict management, Openness, and Motivational than the athlete male / coach male group. Additionally, the athlete female / coach male group revealed higher Motivational than the athlete male / coach male group. Future applications were also discussed regarding the CARM-Q as an assessment of the quality of the coach-athlete relationship in Japanese junior sport settings.
The role of self-compassion and coping in the prevention or aggravation of burnout in Japanese professional caregivers for the elderly Teppei Imakita (Tottori University) , Mihoko Nakamine (Hiratani Child Development Clinic) , and Hiroshi Sato (Kwansei Gakuin University)Self-compassion and coping play important roles in the prevention or aggravation of stress response. However, less is known about how self-compassion and coping are linked to burnout, which is the specific stress response in professional caregivers. In this study, we examined the relationships between self-compassion, adaptive and maladaptive coping styles, and burnout controlling for the influence of work stressors on burnout in Japanese professional caregivers for the elderly (124 care staff and 132 home-care workers). The results of structural equation modeling provided two different models linking self-compassion to burnout via coping styles in care staff and home-care workers. The root mean square error of approximation in each sample was .056 and .053, respectively, which suggests that the data largely fit the model. These findings suggest that incorporating self-compassion training into a traditional model of stress management is effective in preventing burnout in professional caregivers.
