Purpose: This study was done to examine relationships between nurse staffing level and postsurgical patient outcomes using inpatient database from the National Health Insurance. Methods: Records of 111,491 patients who received one of 12 types of surgery between January and December, 2009 were identified and analyzed in this study. Nurse staffing level was measured using adjusted nurse staffing grades from 0 to 7. Patient outcomes were defined as in-hospital mortality, or pneumonia, sepsis, or urinary tract infection after surgery. Logistic regression analyses estimated by Generalized Estimation Model, were used to analyze the association between nurse staffing level and patient outcomes. Results: An inverse relationship was found between nurse staffing and patient mortality. Compared with patients who were cared for in hospitals with the highest nurse staffing (Grades 0-1), increases in the odds of dying were found in those with Grades 6-7 [OR (odds ratio)= 2.99, 95% CI (confidence interval)= 1.94-4.60], those with Grades 4-5 (OR= 1.78, 95% CI= 1.24-2.57) and those with Grades 2-3 (OR= 1.57, 95% CI= 1.25-1.98). Lower nurse staffing level was also associated with higher number of cases in pneumonia and sepsis. Conclusion: Policies for providing adequate nurse staffing is required to enhance quality of care and lead to better perioperative patient outcomes.

Methods: Between February and May 2012, 276 Chinese students from 3 universities located in Chungnam province participated in the current study using a questionnaire survey. Data was analysed using SPSS 18.0 program. Results: The mean score of acculturative stress, resilience, and depression was 82.7, 129.0, and 15.6 respectively. The acculturative stress was significantly related to perceived health status (F=10.57, p<.001), TOPIK(t=7.55, p=.006) and the major(F=2.87, p=.024). Resilience was related to the race(F=13.49, p<.001), perceived heath status (F=10.57, p<.001), tuition(F=8.52, p<.001), and level of Koran language(F=5.91, p=.003). Resilience correlated to acculturative stress (r=-0.21, p<.001) and depression(r=-0.48, p<.001) by showing a mediating effect between accuturative stress and depression. Conclusion: In order to improve resilience as a mediating factor with depression of Chinese students in Korea, we suggest the development various programs about external supporting programs.
The purpose of the study was to identify and compare levels of recognition of empowerment, job satisfaction, organizational commitment between Advanced Practice Nurses(APN) and Registered Nurses(RN) of hospitals. Data collection was done by the 85 APN and 120 RN of six large hospitals, four medium sized hospitals in Seoul and Incheon. T-test and ANOVA using SPSS 18.0 were performed. There were no significant differences of empowerment between APN(3.56±0.53) and RN(3.50±0.54)(t =-. 861, p = 0.390). job satisfaction between APN(3.36±0.53) and RN(3.25±0.46)(t =-1.575, p = 0.117), organizational commitment between APN(3.11±0.34) and RN(3.05±0.36)(t =-1.301, p = 0.195). Empowerment, job satisfaction, organizational commitment of APN and RN showed no significant differences. There are some reasons why it resulted in no significant difference between APN and RN. APN's role in Korea is not clearly established and distinguished from RN, lack of appropriacy of employment and reward, and lack of the institutional foundation for APN's operation and efficiency.
