1,10‐Phenanthroline–H2O2–KSCN–CuSO4–NaOH oscillating chemiluminescence system

Abstract: In this paper, oscillating chemiluminescence (CL), 1,10-phenanthroline H2O2-KSCN-CuSO4-NaOH system, was studied in a batch reactor. The system described is a novel, slowly damped oscillating CL system, generated by coupling the well-known Epstein-Orban, H2O2-KSCN-CuSO4-NaOH chemical oscillator reaction with the CL reaction involving the oxidation of 1,10-phenanthroline by hydrogen peroxide, catalyzed by copper(II) in alkaline medium. In this system, the CL reaction acts as a detector or indicator system of the… Show more

“…The CL reaction is critically dependent on pH and occurs only above pH 7. Usually the CL reaction with H 2 O 2 occurs in alkaline solutions, perhaps due to the lesser extent of interference of hydronium ion on the • OH and • O 2 − radicals (17)(18)(19)(20)(21)(22). The buffer concentration did not affect the CL intensity up to 0.01 mol/L.…”

“…On the basis of known mechanisms of the oscillatory reaction (37), the CL reaction of TSC (49,50) and the CL reaction of 1,10-phenanthroline (51,52), the possible oscillating CL reaction mechanisms of TSC and 1,10-phenanthroline were briefly discussed by Sorouraddin and Iranifam (40,41). As mentioned before, the mechanism of CL-oscillating reaction consists of 30 kinetic steps involving 26 independent variables.…”

“…2 (38 (Fig. 4) (41). In the first system, comprising luminol-H2O2-KSCN-CuSO4-NaOH, narrow and slightly asymmetric light pulses of 4 s half-width were emitted at 424 nm with a period of 4-25 min depending on flow rate and concentrations in the CSTR applied in this study (39).…”

“…More recently, the different potentiometric responses of various inert electrodes were successfully interpreted using a simplified model involving 12 steps and 9 intermediates for the OE reaction . Other studies on the OE reaction have regarded new pulsating sensors to monitor oscillations , a conductometry technique for analytical applications , and a study of oscillating chemiluminescence induced by the addition of 1,10‐phenanthroline to the system .…”
