1. Laryngeal Cyst and Sudden Death

Abstract: Laryngeal cysts are relatively uncommon and account for about five per cent of benign laryngeal lesions. The commonest location is the epiglottis. Pathologically these lesions may be divided into epithelial, tonsillar or oncocytic types. The patients may be asymptomatic or present with hoarseness, dysphagia, cough or airway obstruction. Epithelial cysts of the larynx, although histologically benign, may produce sudden and unexpected death from asphyxia. A case is presented of a 32-year-old female who was sexua… Show more

“…In so-called 'café coronary' there is acute obstruction of the airways: usually the pharynx by a food bolus; however, there is a possible role for vagal inhibition [306][307][308]. Laryngeal cysts may also cause obstruction and death [309].…”

“…Laryngoceles can become infected, fill with an inflammatory exudate (laryngopyelocele), and due to the inflammatory process occlude their connection to the airway [24], making the distinction from a cyst even more difficult. There have been several reports in the literature of laryngeal cysts and laryngoceles causing acute airway obstruction [25][26][27] or sudden death [23,[28][29][30].…”

“…Although relatively rare, laryngeal cysts can cause severe airway obstruction and even a sudden death due to asphyxiation has been described [7]. Saccular cysts may be asymptomatic, or the patient may have symptoms common to any space-occupying lesion of the larynx.…”
