“…In order to create a corpus of midwifery treatises, on the one hand, and a corpus of periodicals on the other hand, data for this study were drawn from two larger corpora of medical writing: Early Modern English Medical Texts (EMEMT; Taavitsainen et al 2010), covering the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and Late Modern English Medical Texts (LMEMT; Taavitsainen et al 2019), covering the eighteenth century. In particular, the relevant EMEMT sections devoted to midwifery and children's diseases (Pahta & Ratia 2010: 89-95), covering the treatises, and the PT (Hiltunen 2010), the only periodical in print during the seventeenth century, were explored; in addition, the LMEMT sections on midwifery (Pahta 2019), for treatises, and the PT/EMJ (Hiltunen 2019) and GM (Taavitsainen 2019), for periodicals, were consulted.…”

This article provides a corpus-driven overview of the ‘epistemic space’ surrounding the use of two lockwords of Early and Late Modern English writings on midwifery and childbirth, child and uterus. Rather than searching for epistemic stance markers themselves, this study employs the ‘bottom-up’ approach by examining the propositions containing these lockwords, and then seeing what particular epistemic meanings are signalled by the surrounding discourse context. Both treatises and periodicals representative of medical writing from the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries are examined, thus allowing any diachronic trends characteristic of a period that witnessed much change in midwifery practices, and medicine more broadly, to be uncovered. Data are drawn from the Early Modern English Medical Texts (EMEMT) and Late Modern English Medical Texts (LMEMT) corpora.

On the Sources of Spoken (Italian) Language in a Historical Perspective

In this paper, we research the importance of corpora in historical pragmatics. From the origins of historical pragmatics as a science the question of choosing an appropriate corpus has been in the center of attention. The problematics of historical pragmatics demand a corpus that reflects faithfully the spoken language. However, such registered sources do not exist. Thus, researchers face problems when choosing corpora that have to be written but also reflect speech. That is why we synthesize a review of often-used corpora and we present their advantages and disadvantages. We apply the theory of Giovanni Nencioni (1976) that differs between the spoken language in the true meaning of the word (parlato parlato), written spoken language (parlato scritto), and recited spoken language (parlato recitato). Based on his research, we can claim that some of the privileged forms in historical pragmatics are literary works, theater pieces, religious scriptures, and speech transcripts. Thus, we examine the advantages and disadvantages of the aforementioned corpora and we aim to determine if they are suitable to be used in historical pragmatics. The research shows that it is impossible to find a completely adequate corpus because none of them reflect the spoken language in all of its characteristics and they approach it only partially.

In questo contributo ci proponiamo di analizzare le modalità di modulazione delle congratulazioni in un corpus epistolare del medioevo redatto in lingua italiana. La corrispondenza dalla Repubblica di Ragusa era diretta agli ambasciatori e agli altri ufficiali nel Regno di Bosnia tra il 1400 e il 1463. La ricerca si basa sull'analisi delle lettere redatte in italiano cancelleresco (koinè) che era in uso nel pubblico ufficio raguseo nel Quattrocento. L'obiettivo della ricerca è determinare le modalità di funzionamento delle congratulazioni nel corpus. Analizziamo quindi i brani in cui vengono espresse le congratulazioni e il loro ruolo nel discorso diplomatico secondo le norme della pragmatica storica. L'ipotesi della ricerca è che le congratulazioni assumano un ruolo pubblico che funge da sviluppo dei rapporti sociali e che mostrino caratteristiche tipizzate e formulaiche. I risultati dello studio rivelano una struttura propria dell'atto in questione. Inoltre, dimostriamo che la sincerità delle congratulazioni è dubbia e che esse servono come manifestazione di intesa che anticipa le richieste del mittente.Parole chiave: congratulazioni, koinè, atti linguistici in diacronia, discorso diplomatico, Quattrocento, Ragusa.
