11.3: Distinguished Paper: High Transmission VA‐LCD with a Three Dimensionally Shaped Pixel Electrode for 4K × 2K Displays

Abstract: A three dimensionally shaped pixel electrode (TD electrode) for the 4K × 2K VA‐LCD is proposed. With this novel electrode, a more efficient and stable transmittance property can be achieved. The mechanisms for transmittance improvements and the stability of productions were analyzed with comparisons to the conventional VA electrode.

“…High-image-quality TFT-LCDs require a higher resolution [4], but this increases the number of data driver ICs and the product cost [5]- [7]. To reduce the number of data driver ICs while maintaining a high resolution, a double rate driving (DRD) method has been studied [8]- [11].…”

“…For example, the aperture ratio of UHD has approximately 65% of the Full HD aperture ratio. [2] Therefore, the studies of high transmittance have focused on the manufacturing technologies to reduce the width of gate and data lines and the material development to improve the mobility of transistors in order to shrink the area of the transistor and extend the aperture area of the pixel [3]. And many researchers also have studied for new types of LC modes and wall electrode LCDs for high transmittance and high resolution LCDs.…”
