Objectives: Suicide is still one of the leading causes of youth mortality, and amongst others previous suicide attempts have been found to be one of the strongest risk factors for suicide. The objective of this study is to examine risk factors of suicide attempts in a total population of Faroese adolescents. It is expected that anxious attachment, high scores on negative affectivity and low scores on past and present social support were correlated to an increased risk of life-time suicide attempts in both female and male adolescents. Method: Analyses were conducted based on data from The Faroese Adolescent Trauma Study, a self-report questionnaire survey including a total population of Faroese eighth graders (N = 687; 85 % response rate, mean age 14.2 years, SD = 2.1). The questionnaire included The Revised Adult Attachment Scale (RAAS), The Trauma Symptom Checklist (TSC), and The Crisis Support Scale (CSS). Results: In the total population 9.9 % (N = 68) of the participants reported life-time suicide attempt; of those 28 % were boys and 72 % were girls. In line with the expectations, the initial comparison showed that adolescents reporting life-time suicide attempt had significantly higher scores on attachment anxiety and negative affectivity, and had significantly lower scores on attachment closeness, and both past and present social support. Further analyses stratified on gender, however, revealed unexpected results, as a high score on negative affectivity only was a significant risk factor for life-time suicide attempt among the girls, and high score on attachment closeness only was a significant protective factor of life-time suicide attempt among the boys. Conclusions: This study provides important data about the role of attachment, negative affectivity, and social support in suicide attempts in a total population of Faroese adolescents. Moreover the results show the necessity of taking gender into account in research of risk and protective factors of suicide attempts, and when establishing arrangements to prevent and treat suicide attempts in adolescents.

ResumenLa depresión constituye hoy la principal causa de morbilidad y discapacidad entre adolescentes, y el suicidio, la tercera causa de defunción en el mundo. Se propuso describir características de una población adolescente escolarizada con antecedentes de intento de suicidio. Estudio transversal, descriptivo y retrospectivo. Se empleó una base de datos de adolescentes de 56 colegios públicos y privados. Muestreo probabilístico; cuestionario auto-administrado, estructurado y anónimo. La información fue cargada en planilla electrónica de Excel, analizada con SPSS 15.0-IBM. Del total de la población (661), 16,6%(110) manifestó que intentó quitarse la vida, 46,4% (51) era de sexo masculino y 53,6% (59) femenino. El 20,2% (22) tenía de 12 a 14 años, 61,7% (68) de 15 a 17 y 17,2% (19) 18 años y más. Cursaba la Educación Escolar Básica el 49,1% (54) y 50% (55) el Bachillerato. Pertenecía a colegios públicos el 61,8% (68) y 30,9%(34) a privados. Vivía con los padres el 67,3% (74). De los adolescentes que intentaron suicidarse alguna vez, 53,6% (59) pertenecen al sexo femenino y 46,4% (51) al masculino. Un 39,1% (43) tenía familiar con intento de suicidio. Respondió en primera consulta que sufrió abuso sexual el 11,8% (13) y 38,2% (42) cuando se reiteró la pregunta. Consultó alguna vez por problemas emocionales el 19,1% (21). Se encontró una correlación significativa entre haber sufrido abuso sexual e intento de suicidio (p=0,000). Se evidenciaron situaciones graves de trastornos de salud mental sin ser detectadas institucionalmente como oportunidad para intervenir y evitar muertes adolescentes. Suicidality Protective Factors for African American Adolescents: A Systematic Review of the Research Literature

Overall rates of African American adolescent suicide have been increasing for the past 50 years; however, the research literature examining factors related to suicide for these vulnerable youth is sparse. The shortage of research literature on suicidality protective factors is particularly significant. Little is known about the impact of protective factors on African American youth, especially within subgroups (e.g., gender and socioeconomic status). Approximately 40% of African American youth live in poverty, exposing them to contextual stressors that place them at increased risk for suicidality. Females are significantly more likely to have suicidal ideation and make attempts, whereas males surpass females in their rates of completions. To better understand suicidality protective factors, we conducted a systematic review of the research literature on protective factors for African American adolescents, with a focus on gender differences and urban, low-income youth. This review yielded 26 articles that met inclusion criteria and identified protective factors in the following categories: familial, religiosity-based, relational/social, personal, and socioecological. Gender differences and protective factors for urban, low-income youth are discussed, regarding their role in the prevention of suicidality. This review highlights a need for further research to identify and clarify suicidality protective factors for African American adolescents.
