To confirm the identification of phosphoserine at position 5 in the shark MGP sequence, the intact protein was treated with ethanethiol in order to convert the putative phosphoserine to S-ethylcysteine (Meyer et al, 1986(Meyer et al, , 1991 and then subjected to N-terminal sequence analysis.
