“…Molecular data are scarce for Dipsocoromorpha (ribosomal and/or C O l data for three Ceratocombidae, one Dipsocoridae, and three hypselosomatine Schizopteridae) and were published as part of higher-level phylogenetic analyses of Heteroptera (Wheeler et al 1993;Schuh et al 2009;Li et al 2012) or barcoding stud ies (Jung et al 2011). Last but not least, the position of Dipsocoromorpha among the infraorders of Heteroptera is far from settled, with hypotheses treating the group as the sister taxon to all Heteroptera except Enicocephalomorpha or as the sister to Gerromorpha, among other hypotheses (Mahner 1993;Wheeler et al 1993;Xie et al 2008;Weirauch and Schuh 2011;Li et al 2012). The absence of phylogenetic studies focusing on Dipsocoromorpha therefore hinders our understanding of relationships of true bugs in the broad sense, leaves the current classification of Dipsocoromorpha untested, and impedes exploration of this fascinating group for evolutionary studies.…”

“…They also mapped cephalic character data on three alternative hypotheses, being Wheeler et al ( 1993 ) the most parsimonious one, requiring 201 steps for their data. The topologies of Xie et al ( 2008 ) and Mahner ( 1993 ) required 202 and 212 steps, respectively.…”

“…The monophyly of Nepomorpha is widely accepted (Wheeler et al 1993 ;Mahner 1993 ;Scherbakov and Popov 2002 ;Xie et al 2008 ), but Hua et al ( 2009 ) found contrasting results, suggesting Nepomorpha was paraphyletic and the Pleidae should be elevated to infraordinal level, i.e., Pleomorpha; given their small taxon sample and lack of a combined effort including morphology, their taxonomic decisions have not been accepted (Weirauch and Schuh 2011 ). Within Nepomorpha, there is an agreement in placing the Nepidae + Belostomatidae as the sister group to the remaining Nepomorpha and in treating the Helotrephidae, Notonectidae, and Pleidae as a clade (Rieger 1976 ;Mahner 1993 ;Hebsgaard et al 2004 ).…”

“…So these methods are mainly used in the analyses of tRNA, internal transcribed spacers (ITS) and some parts of nuclear rDNA with moderate level of length variation. Due to the complexity of length variation, the parts with hyper-extensive length are better manually removed from the original sequences before inferring phylogeny (Xie et al, 2008(Xie et al, , 2009.…”
