Species in the heteropteran infraorder Dipsocoromorpha, or litter bugs, are small, cryptic, stunningly diverse and understudied. In addition to the vast amount of species discovery and morphological explora tion that remain to be done in this group, phylogenetic relationships within the litter bugs are poorly understood. A phylogenetic framework will make Dipsocoromorpha more accessible for systematic stud ies at all levels and is therefore a first step towards a comprehensive treatment of the group. Using a molecular dataset (87 taxa of Hemiptera including 35 Dipsocoromorpha; two genes) and maximum likelihood and parsimony methods, we here aim to test, for the first time using cladistic methods and a comprehensive dataset, relationships within Dipsocoromorpha. We investigate if Dipsocoromorpha are monophyletic, shed light on the relationships among the three families included in this analysis, and study relationships within the largest family of Dipsocoromorpha, the Schizopteridae. Based on this dataset, we find that the monophyly of Dipsocoromorpha is strongly supported in all analyses and that Ceratocombidae and Dipsocoridae together are recovered as the sister group of Schizopteridae. Within Schizopteridae, Hypselosomatinae are treated as the sister group to a dade formed by the monophyletic Ogeriinae and monophyletic Schizopterinae. Within Schizopterinae, there is evidence for the monophyly of the Corixidea genus group, and we present additional infra-generic and genus-level hypotheses. We discuss these hypotheses in the light of current classifications and hypotheses on relationships and as the first contribu tion towards revealing the phylogenetic relationships of a remarkable and neglected clade of true bugs.

A review of Heteroptera classifi cation, biogeography, and phylogeography is presented. The use of molecular data signifi cantly expanded the knowledge of phylogenetic relationships among and within heteropteran infraorders. However, taxa historically less studied continue to receive little attention. Promising, new molecular approaches with increased genetic markers and broader taxon sampling, as well as new morphological approaches (e.g., microtomography), are the future for more stable classifi cations and a better comprehension of the heteropteran evolutionary history, but their application is still incipient. A non-exhaustive overview of studies about Neotropical heteropteran biogeography is made and discussed, including those about intercontinental connections and regional distribution patterns. The most comprehensible studies, and more promising area, seem to be those focused on distribution patterns, especially employing macroecological methods, and trying to elucidate what are the major factors responsible for the distribution of the group in the Neotropics. Finally, we present an overview of phylogeographic studies involving Neotropical Heteroptera. It is clear that the best biogeographic and phylogeographic studied groups are those with medical and economical importance (e.g., Reduviidae and Pentatomidae).

Ribosomal RNAs are important because they catalyze the synthesis of peptides and proteins. Comparative studies of the secondary structure of 18S rRNA have revealed the basic locations of its many length-conserved and lengthvariable regions. In recent years, many more sequences of 18S rDNA with unusual lengths have been documented in GenBank. These data make it possible to recognize the diversity of the secondary and tertiary structures of 18S rRNAs and to identify the length-conserved parts of 18S rDNAs. The longest 18S rDNA sequences of almost every known eukaryotic phylum were included in this study. We illustrated the bioinformatics-based structure to show that, the regions that are more length-variable, regions that are less length-variable, the splicing sites for introns, and the sites of A-minor interactions are mostly distributed in different parts of the 18S rRNA. Additionally, this study revealed that some length-variable regions or insertion positions could be quite close to the functional part of the 18S rRNA of Foraminifera organisms. The tertiary structure as well as the secondary structure of 18S rRNA can be more diverse than what was previously supposed. Besides revealing how this interesting gene evolves, it can help to remove ambiguity from the alignment of eukaryotic 18S rDNAs and to improve the performance of 18S rDNA in phylogenetic reconstruction. Six nucleotides shared by Archaea and Eukaryota but rarely by Bacteria are also reported here for the first time, which might further support the supposed origin of eukaryote from archaeans.
