(2-Phenylethyl)ammonium tetrabromothallate(III)

Abstract: The structure of the title compound, (C8H12N)[TlBr4], is characterized by tetracoordinate thallium, forming a regular tetrahedron TlBr4 with Tl—Br distances ranging between 2.528 (2) and 2.562 (2) Å. Chains of TlBr4 tetrahedra oriented along the c axis form pseudo‐hexagonal rings, containing two columns formed by obliquely stacked amine cations.

“…1, Table 1). The Tl-Br bonds and Br-Tl-Br angles are in the range of 2.5452 (13)-2.5518 (9) Å [mean value is 2.5481 (12) Å] and 107.70 (4)-112.20 (5)°, respectively, in which they are in accordance with the corresponding values (Abdi et al, 2005;He et al, 2002;Linden et al, 2002). On the other hand, in the cation the bond lengths and angles are the same as those reported (Al-Far & Ali, 2007a;Hao & Liu, 2007;Churakov et al, 2006;Yang et al, 2004).…”

“…Although the syntheses employed the bromide salt of the organic base, Basolos hypothesis suggests that the inherent size mismatch between the bulky cations and the Br À ion would not favor the reappearance of the simple bromide salt upon crystallization. Indeed, 13 of the employed monovalent cations yielded the straightforward [BaseH] · [TlBr 4 ] salts, as do the 2,5-dimethylpyrazinium and (2-phenylethyl)ammonium cations [45] [46]. 2-Amino-3-methylpyridinium (XXIX ) [1] 2-Amino-4-methylpyridinium (XXX ) [1] 4-Methylpyridinium ( XXXI ) [1] 4-( Dimethylamino)pyridinium ( XXXII) [1] The four remaining monovalent cations, V, XV, XVII, and XVIII, produced mixed salt arrangements in which [TlBr 4 ] À and Br À ions were present as essentially discrete entities [1], although it could be argued that there is some very weak Tl ··· Br secondary bonding in the 2-bromopyridinium (XVIII) and 1,10-phenanthrolinium (XV) salts to give [TlBr 4 ] À ··· Br À ion association in the former (Tl ··· Br ¼ 4.1545(6) ) and extended [TlBr 4 ] À ··· [TlBr 4 ] À chains in the latter (Tl ··· Br ¼ 4.099(1) ).…”

“…However, their crystallographic studies are limited because their insolubility make it difficult to obtain a good single-crystal. As a part of our research interest in the low-dimensional magnetism (Park & Lee 2005, we synthesized a series of the layered inorganic-organic perovskite materials using phenethylamine and present the crystal structure of (Abdi et al, 2005). Except for (C 8 H 12 N)TlBr 4 , in which the heavy atom has trivalent, the other bivalent compounds have tetrahedral MBr 4 anions with non-magnetic ions in common.…”
