226Ra, 232Th and 40K contents in water samples in part of central deserts in Iran and their potential radiological risk to human population

Abstract: BackgroundThe radiological quality of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in some samples of water resources collected in Anarak-Khour a desertic area, Iran has been measured by direct gamma ray spectroscopy using high purity germanium detector in this paper.ResultThe concentration ranged from ≤0.5 to 9701 mBq/L for 226Ra; ≤0.2 to 28215 mBq/L for 232Th and < MDA to 10332 mBq/L for 40K. The radium equivalent activity was well below the defined limit of 370Bq/L. The calculated external hazard indices were found to be less than… Show more

“…One of these research areas is about water, which is one of the basic needs of human. Such studies are widely available in the literature (Fatima et al 2006;Kitto and Kim 2005;Kobya et al 2011;Ehsanpour et al 2014;Mashiatullah et al 2016;Alseroury et al 2018). Chemical analysis [such as pH, conductivity, total dissolved solids (TDS)], have added to the radiological analysis of water by a number of researchers (Lin et al 2003;El Arabi et al 2006;Asaduzzaman et al 2016;Goher et al 2019;Ahmad et al 2019).…”

“…Whereas natural radioactivity comes mainly from long-lived primordial radionuclides that are widespread in the Earth's crust (Alharbi and El-Taher 2013), human activities such as mining and generation of nuclear power add artificial radionuclides to the environment. Human beings are therefore exposed to radiations from sources outside the body and from radionuclides that are ingested through consumption of food and water or inhaled radioactive gases such as radon (Ehsanpour et al 2014;Taskin et al 2009). …”

“…Globally, many studies studied the effects and resources of the radioactive material [5]. People have assessed the radioactivity magnitudes in rock, soil, and sediments in Anoka Zamfara State.…”
