25 Years of Drilling Technology - A Review of Significant Accomplishments

Abstract: Through the publication of 300 papers directly related to drilling, the journals of the Society of Petroleum Engineers have contributed significantly to the increasing effectiveness of rotary drilling over the past 25 years. Here is a brief summary of some of those reports dealing with aspects of planning and executing the rotary drilling operation. Introduction One of the impressive developments in the petroleum industry during the past 25 years has been the… Show more

“…Drilling fluid is typical water-based or oil-based depending on the needs of field operations [1,2]. Compared to waterbased drilling fluids, oil-based drilling fluids can provide excellent lubrication, stabilize water-sensitive clays, reduce leak-off, and form thinner filter cakes; besides, they can be applied in deep reservoirs with characteristics of high pressure and extreme temperature [2][3][4][5].…”

“…62,63 Partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (PHPA) is a firstgeneration PAM originally used in the 1970s for drilling muds and EOR processes (Figure 4). 64 PHPA is an anionic block copolymer consisting of neutral acrylamide and anionic acrylate groups with an average normal charge density of 30% for the anionic residues. These polymers are non-toxic and perform in low-to-moderate-salinity [<25 000 mg/L total dissolved solids (TDS)] water at loadings of 0.75−1.5 gallons of chemical per thousand gallons of water (gpt).…”
