27‐3: High Performance Fringe Field Switching Mode Liquid Crystal Display with Photo‐alignment Technology for Vehicular Application

Abstract: We have developed a novel photo-alignment FFS-LCD (PA-FFS-LCD) with a wide nematic temperature range from -40°C to 95°C. Our developed PA-FFS-LCD shows fast gray-to-gray response time (< 20 ms at 25°C and < 300 ms at -30°C), wide viewing angle, and high contrast ratio over 1500. Image sticking was not recognized owing to a suitable configuration of pixel and common electrodes. The developed LCD can be used for vehicular application. “…Owning to the rapid development of autonomous vehicles with various customization demands, the automotive inner displays are becoming more intelligent, bigger and curved shaped in recent years [1] . The rigid displays like Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) in the vehicles are still limited in the curved construction and the structure collocation with vehicle design, and their disadvantages of LCDs with low contrast ratio (CR), narrow viewing angle, slow response time (gray-to-gray) and especially narrow operating temperature range [2][3] would district the development of automotive application. Organic Lightemitting Diodes (OLEDs) with flexible substrate and thin film encapsulation (TFE) can easily be constructed for automotive applications, even in foldable and rollable shapes.…”

“…Furthermore, a demand for displays toward automotive application is also increasing, and most of the displays used for this application are liquid crystal displays (LCDs). However, the LCDs show slow gray-to-gray response speed, low contrast ratio, and narrow viewing angle [2]. Besides this, the stability of the LCD at both low and high temperature is principally low because a nematic phase of an LC material is shifted to other phases.…”

“…Contrast ratio is a very important factor for automotive display because high contrast ratio helps drivers to recognize the contents on the display clearly and quickly. The second item is slow grey-to-grey (GTG) response time at low temperature such as -30 ℃ and -40 ℃, the response time is longer than 100 ms at -40 ℃ while it is less than 20 ms at room temperature [4] . Slow response time may cause safety issues.…”

“…Different from LCDs, OLEDs were solid state and self-emitting display with the advantages of fast response time, high contrast ratio, flexible as well as wide operation environment (-40 ℃ to 90 ℃) [5][6][7] . Therefore, organic light-emitting diode (OLED) had be considered as more suitable for automotive application than LCD [4][5][6] . However, long-term reliability, high luminance and 3D assembly of OLED are top three important bottlenecks for automotive applications.…”
