3-D low-loss coplanar waveguide transmission lines in multilayer MMICs

Abstract: Newly developed transmission-line structures using the great flexibility of three-dimensional multilayer technology have been designed and fabricated. In this paper, we demonstrate that monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) coplanar waveguide transmission lines with a wide range of characteristic impedances can easily be designed using the multilayer technique. Furthermore, this implementation can avoid the well-known current crowding effects on the conductor edges minimizing dissipation loss. The sys… Show more

“…The set of low-loss 3-D CPW transmission lines with characteristic impedance ranging from 10-50 to 70 Ω is examined [12]. The values of characteristic impedances can reach even higher levels by changing the dimensions of the transmission line like the width of the signal strip or the width of the gap in CPW.…”

“…The application of conventional CPW has very limited range of characteristic devices. The practical size of the slot and the width of the center plane limit the fabrication and high losses result in current crowding effect at the conductor edges [12]. Paper [12] provides the fabrication and simulation results of the CPW transmission line with the characteristic impedance from 10 Ohm to 70 Ohm, by applying the multilayer technique.…”

“…MCPWs have been previously proposed to reduce loss and achieve a large range of impedance in MMICs , and are also referred to as (center-)elevated CPW [4]- [7]. Most of these prior work focused on traditional MMIC technologies such as GaAs, and hence usually require additional process steps.…”

“…1 Introduction Over the past few decades, the development of high-frequency rectifiers into microwave, terahertz, and light frequencies has become a major area of research. These devices, such as Schottky diode, heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT), and planar-doped barrier diode (PDBD), are mainly used in the detection systems which have many applications, including security and defence, medical and healthcare, communication, and radio astronomy [1][2][3][4][5].…”
