In this work the applicability of an ensemble of population and machine learning models to predict the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain is evaluated, relying solely on public datasets. Firstly, using only incidence data, we trained machine learning models and adjusted classical ODE-based population models, especially suited to capture long term trends. As a novel approach, we then made an ensemble of these two families of models in order to obtain a more robust and accurate prediction. We then proceed to improve machine learning models by adding more input features: vaccination, human mobility and weather conditions. However, these improvements did not translate to the overall ensemble, as the different model families had also different prediction patterns. Additionally, machine learning models degraded when new COVID variants appeared after training. We finally used Shapley Additive Explanation values to discern the relative importance of the different input features for the machine learning models’ predictions. The conclusion of this work is that the ensemble of machine learning models and population models can be a promising alternative to SEIR-like compartmental models, especially given that the former do not need data from recovered patients, which are hard to collect and generally unavailable.

O meu propósito, neste trabalho, é o de estabelecer um paralelo entre a literatura e a ideia da originalidade, pelo viés da tradução. Para tal fim, analiso o conto ‘O tradutor cleptomaníaco’ (2016), do escritor austro-húngaro Dezso Kosztolányi. De modo a amparar a minha análise literária do conto supracitado, trago reflexões pontuais de Jorge Luis Borges em nove de seus pequenos contos e ensaios publicados nas coletâneas: História universal da infâmia (1982), Outras inquisições (2007), Ficções (2007), O Aleph (2008) e ‘O livro de areia’ (2009). Além desses livros, trago também o conto ‘A memória do mundo’ (2007), de Italo Calvino. O ingrediente comum que justifica a seleção de tais fontes, e que conduz uma discussão sobre a tarefa do tradutor, se refere à memória, à gênese e ao (re)nascimento. Tendo, além disso, o conceito de mito da origem como fio ontológico que interliga esses textos, analiso se e como ‘O tradutor cleptomaníaco’ (Kosztolányi, 2016) pode contribuir para essa reflexão acerca da originalidade. Os resultados finais de minha análise apontam na direção de um conceito de tradução que, essencialmente, implica uma redução necessária – uma condensação do sentido dentro daquele sentido formado pela decodificação particular do leitor tradutor.

Post-Nietzschean thought has subverted the metaphysics of essentialist Platonic thinking about meaning. It has made significant contributions to elevating translation to a superior position after being considered inferior and secondary by essentialist thinking for more than two millennia. The purpose of this paper is to answer the question: What insights do we gain from post-Nietzschean thought into meaning, and how might these impact the future of translation? We will shed light on some of the significant post-Nietzschean contributions that have paved the way for various insights into translation. These insights primarily contradict the essentialist viewpoint on the concept of meaning in translation, which has long regarded translation as inferior to the original. This paper adopts a corpus-based method that focuses mainly on Jorge Luis Borges’ enriching analysis of The Translators of The Thousand and One Night and Jacques Derrida’s reasonable letter entitled A Letter to a Japanese Friend. It also incorporates some other relevant arguments, including the work of Rosemary Arrojo, which contrasts many key post-Nietzschean contributions to provide anti-platonic perspectives on translation’s role in the formation of meaning and identity. This study suggests that post-Nietzschean perspectives on meaning may prompt us to reconsider our understanding of meaning and the original text, as well as our approach to translating and teaching translation.
