37.1: OLED Displays under Ambient Illumination, an Implementation of IEC 62341‐6‐2

Abstract: This contribution introduces a first implementation of the measurement setup according to IEC 62341-6-2 for evaluation of the effect of ambient illumination on OLED display contrast and chromaticity. A sampling sphere is providing hemispherical diffuse illumination, with and without specular components, in the d/8-geometry, and a point-light source is providing directional illumination. From the spectral reflectance factors thus obtained contrast and chromaticity for arbitrary illuminants (i.e. spectra) and … Show more

“…The reflectance of displays is commonly measured under two extreme illumination situations: (1) under hemispherical diffuse illumination (similar to the situation under a cloudy sky) and (2) under directional illumination as described in detail in e.g. IEC 62341-6-2 [12]. Details on the directional reflectance distribution function can then obtained by evaluation of the lateral reflectance distribution under point or line-source illumination as described in [13].…”

“…We have measured the hemispherical diffuse reflectance factor, R hemi , according to IEC 62341-6-2 [12] of two state-of-the-art displays with integrated touch-screens for handheld devices (OLED and LC) and the reflectance distribution functions of 1 OLED and 3 LCD-screens as described in [13] as basis for estimation of display performance under ambient illumination.…”

“…Some of the terms in Eqs. (5) and (6) will not apply, depending on the display technologies being evaluated. For example, a transparent LCD may not have an emission term, and an opaque reflective display will not have emission and transmission terms.…”

“…This approach provided a great deal of flexibility in predicting the display performance for a wide range of ambient environments and simplified the testing process to measuring one source at a time. Because of the method's ability to simulate realistic indoor and outdoor display performance, it was further refined by the International Committee on Display Metrology, included in several international standards, and applied in commercial measurement systems …”
