“…Moorman et al (10) The above mentioned findings are in favor of TSP as a prognostic factor for adenocarcinomas, but there is no information about SCC other than articles about desmoplasia. The association of desmoplastic response and unfavorable prognostic histopathological findings and recurrences were described for skin SCC (14)(15)(16)(17). de Diego SJI (40) could not detect any relationship between desmoplasia with local recurrence in laryngeal and hypopharyngeal carcinomas, but Prim et al (41) presented the desmoplasia at metastatic lymph nodes as a prognostic marker.…”

“…Tumor-stroma ratio or tumor-stroma proportion (TSP) has been presented as a prognostic factor in some types of carcinomas, including prostate, colorectal, esophageal and breast adenocarcinomas (5-11). Additionally, desmoplasia is presented as a poor prognostic factor in colon and lung adenocarcinoma (12)(13)(14) and in squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) ofthe skin and the desmoplastic variant of skin SCC is known as a very aggressive tumor (15)(16)(17)(18). There is no information about TSP of SGG and laryngeal carcinomas, in particular.…”

“…3D histology-guided surgery with the routine paraffin histology or fresh frozen sections provides a combination of high cure rate and tissue conservation with smaller defects; hence it is widely used for cutaneous tumors on the head and neck with advantages for both the functional and aesthetic outcome [4,5,9,[19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27]. A high cure rate is the primary goal, because recurrent incompletely excised BCCs are likely to show more aggressive behavior with higher potential for tissue destruction and facial mutilation [28][29][30].…”

“…Frequently BCCs grow with finger-like, macroscopically invisible tumor extensions that are often missed in the standard wide excision (SE) with conventional cross-sectional histology (bread loaf technique) [4,5]. Incompletely excised BCCs are more likely to recur with complications [6][7][8].…”

“…Similar favorable results have also been reported with the 3‐D histology guided surgery, despite a limited number of reports on this procedure. In a prospective study on 3,320 patients with 5,227 primary BCCs recurrences developed in 36 patients (1% recurrence rate) (Häfner, Breuninger, Moehrle, Trilling, & Krimmel, ), while in a subsequent series of 799 patients with 947 BCCs recurrences occurred in 10 cases (1.1%) (Eberle et al, ). However, in both studies there was no preliminary distinction between primary and recurrent tumors, and all patients underwent fixed tissue procedures.…”
