ZnO/CdS composite was prepared using a simple one‐step hydrothermal method, and its photocatalytic performance was investigated under different conditions. The photocatalytic efficiency of ZnO/CdS was 6345.04 μmol ⋅ g−1 ⋅ h−1 in H2 production from water splitting using Na2S and Na2SO3 as sacrificial agents. The photocatalytic efficiency of eosin Y‐sensitized ZnO/CdS was 6939.39 μmol ⋅ g−1 ⋅ h−1 when triethanolamine was used as a sacrificial agent. The photocatalytic activity of ZnO/CdS was better than those of pristine ZnO and CdS during H2 evolution. The ZnO/CdS composite also exhibited superior photocatalytic activity compared to pristine ZnO and CdS in the degradation of a mixed dye pollutant. The degradation rates of methylene blue, rhodamine B, and orange G in the mixed dye after 120 min of irradiation were 99.41 %, 92.96 %, and 65.74 %, respectively. Possible mechanisms for photocatalytic H2 production and photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants have been proposed.

Heterostructures constructed by conventional methods, particularly those randomly distributed manner on the catalyst surface as well as forming core−shell structures, lead to imbalance in carrier utilization, limitation of charge extraction/transfer, and hindrance of light harvesting. In this study, we constructed a new type of heterostructure consisting of alternate CdS and ZnO grains bridged with good interfaces in the hierarchically periodic macroporous (HPM) walls by the pyrolysis of CdZnS solid solution in a polymethyl methacrylate nanoreactor. Since the alternately arranged CdS−ZnO heterojunctions in the HPM form multiple quantum well-like (MQW-like) band alignments that favor the Z-scheme charge transfer, the photogenerated electrons and holes are spatially separate and accumulated on CdS and ZnO parts, respectively. Besides the desirable spatial separation of the photogenerated charges, the enabled excellent mass transfer in the macroporous structures effectively accelerates the utilization of the carriers. Owing to the synergistic effect of the MQW-like band alignments and the HPM structures, the photocatalytic H 2 evolution rate of HPM CdS−ZnO is as high as 587.8 μmol h −1 without a cocatalyst. This work introduces a fascinating strategy for the creation of alternate heterojunctions to improve carrier utilization.

Engineering targeted and reliable charge transfer pathways in multiphase photocatalysts remains a challenge. Herein, we conceptualize the Cd@CdS-ZnO/reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/ZnS heterostructures coupled with reliable carrier migration channels and visible-light response antennas by building rGO-integrated electrochemical nanoreactors and an ion-exchange process. In this ternary catalyst, the Cd clusters and rGO perform as charge relays to boost carrier transport via the Z-scheme route and accelerate photogenerated carriers to react with surfaceadsorbed substances. Meanwhile, thanks to CdS, the heterostructures have photocatalytic properties under visible light illumination and can also inhibit self-corrosion by shielding Cd clusters to avoid disrupting charge transfer channels. Therefore, the special heterostructure demonstrates fascinating photocatalytic hydrogen production activity without the intervention of cocatalysts. This work provides a feasible protocol for improving the interfaces between metals and semiconductors to achieve efficient photocatalytic hydrogen generation.
