3D photo-responsive optical devices manufactured by advanced printing technologies

Abstract: Photonic components responsive to external optical stimuli are attracting increasing interest, because their properties can be manipulated by light with fast switching times, high spatial definition, and potentially remote control. These aspects can be further enhanced by novel architectures, which have been recently enabled by the availability of 3D printing and additive manufacturing technologies. However, current methods are still limited to passive optical materials, whereas photo-responsive materials woul… Show more

“…The isomerization state of azobenzene compounds transforms from trans to cis under illumination at certain wavelengths (mostly in the UV region) [125]. For example, azobenzene compounds were mixed with photopolymer liquid resins for SLA and used to fabricate a photoresponsive smart window ( Figure 10A) [126]. The transmission spectra were measured with crossed polarizers.…”

“…This approach is suitable for samples manufactured by both FDM and stereolithographic 3D printing. [ 93 ] Formlabs have published a guide for post‐processing of 3D‐printed samples to increase transparency. [ 94,96 ] Manual sanding and polishing, spray coating, and resin coating can be used.…”
