Kinematic reconstruction of modern ocean basins shows that since Pangea breakup a vast area in the Neotethyan realm was lost to subduction. Here we develop a first‐order methodology to reconstruct the kinematic history of the lost plates of the Neotethys, using records of subducted plates accreted to (former) overriding plates, combined with the kinematic analysis of overriding plate extension and shortening. In Cretaceous‐Paleogene times, most of Anatolia formed a separate tectonic plate—here termed “Anadolu Plate”—that floored part of the Neotethyan oceanic realm, separated from Eurasia and Africa by subduction zones. We study the sedimentary and structural history of the Ulukışla basin (Turkey); overlying relics of this plate to reconstruct the tectonic history of the oceanic plate and its surrounding trenches, relative to Africa and Eurasia. Our results show that Upper Cretaceous‐Oligocene sediments were deposited on the newly dated suprasubduction zone ophiolites (~92 Ma), which are underlain by mélanges, metamorphosed and nonmetamorphosed oceanic and continental rocks derived from the African Plate. The Ulukışla basin underwent latest Cretaceous‐Paleocene N‐S and E‐W extension until ~56 Ma. Following a short period of tectonic quiescence, Eo‐Oligocene N‐S contraction formed the folded structure of the Bolkar Mountains, as well as subordinate contractional structures within the basin. We conceptually explain the transition from extension, to quiescence, to shortening as slowdown of the Anadolu Plate relative to the northward advancing Africa‐Anadolu trench resulting from collision of continental rocks accreted to Anadolu with Eurasia, until the gradual demise of the Anadolu‐Eurasia subduction zone.

The Melendiz River is located at the east of Tuz Gölü Fault Zone in western Cappadocia. In the central part of Melendiz River Valley, Ihlara Canyon attracts many tourists due to its landscape, cultural and archaeological values. The Melendiz Valley also encompasses geological and geomorphological features that exemplify the evolutionary history of western Cappadocia. In this study, the late Miocene-Quaternary geomorphological evolution of the Melendiz River Valley was investigated. The results indicate that a fluvial sedimentary sequence with ignimbrite intercalation was deposited during the late Miocene and early Pliocene. This was unconformably overlain by lacustrine limestone (Kışladağ Formation) of Pliocene age. The Pliocene lake regressed westward because of the changes in the tectonic regime and geomorphological processes during the late Pliocene (~ 3 Ma ago) and the initial Melendiz River developed on the lake bottom. During the Quaternary the Melendiz River developed under the control of both the neotectonic regime and the climate. This development provoked a 160-m-deep incision into the Pliocene sediments and the early Pliocene-Miocene ignimbrites below, giving birth to the Ihlara Canyon. ÖZNevşehir ili, Tahar ve Güzelöz yörelerinde geç Miyosen-erken Pliyosen yaşlı volkanosedimenter birimler içerisinde yeralan diyatomitlerden biri Tahar yöresinde (geç Miyosen yaşlı Ürgüp Formasyonu'nun Bayramhacılı Üyesi içerisinde), ikisi Güzelöz yöresinde (erken Pliyosen yaşlı Ürgüp Formasyonu'nun Kışladağ Üyesi içerisinde) olmak üzere ölçülen stratigrafık kesitlerden 21 diyatom cinsine ait 73 tür tanımlanmıştır. Tanımlanan diyatom cins ve türlerinin 20 mikroskobik slayt alandaki bolluk dağılımları dikkate alınarak, inceleme alanındaki diyatomitlerin paleoekolojik özellikleri yorumlandığında; her üç lokasyonda diyatomitlerin oluşumu sırasında göl suyunun nötr ve asit özellik gösterdiği, Tahar ve Güzelöz-2 lokalitelerinde diyatomitlerin oluşumu sırasında göl suyunun tatlı su özelliğinde olduğu, Güzelöz-1 lokalitesinde ise tatlı su özelliğinde başlayıp, tavana doğru acı su özelliğine dönüştüğü, Tahar lokalitesinde (geç Miyosen); göldeki su seviyesinin ve su sıcaklığının yüksek olduğu, göl tabanında çamur bulunduğu, göl suyunun besin oranının başlangıçta düşük-orta başlayıp, tavana doğru ise arttığını, göl suyunun oksijen oranının başlangıçta yüksek, daha sonra orta seviyede bulunduğu, Güzelöz-1 (erken Pliyosen) lokalitesinde; göldeki su seviyesinin ve besin oranının değişken olduğu, göl tabanınında bitkilerin bulunduğu, su sıcaklığının başlangıçta düşük, daha sonra yüksek olduğunu, göl suyunun oksijen oranının başlangıçta yüksek, daha sonra orta seviyede bulunduğu, Güzelöz-2 (erken Pliyosen) lokalitesinde; göldeki su seviyesinin, su sıcaklığının ve besin oranının yüksek olduğu belirlenmiştir. ABSTRACTSeventy-three species of 21 different diatom genera were identified from three stratigraphic sections which are located in the late Miocene-early Pliocene volcanosedimentary units in Tahar and Güzelöz (Nevşehir) areas. One of these sections was measured in the Tahar area (in the late Miocene age Bayramhacılı Member of Ürgüp Formation), and the two sections were measured in the Güzelöz area (early Pliocene age Kışladağ Member of Ürgüp Formation). When evaluated of the investigated area diatomite's palaeoecological properties by considering the distribution of numerical values (in 20 microscopic slide area) of the determined diatom genus A. GÜNEY, A. GÜREL, E. OKUR 256 and species; It have been determined that, when the formation of the diatomite at all three locations, the lake water has neutral and acid properties. At the Tahar and Güzelöz-2 locations the lake water was fresh water feature, also, in the Güzelöz-1 location the lake water was initially as fresh water feature and than changed to bitter water character towards to top of the section. At the Tahar location (late Miocene); lake water's level and temperature was high, the bottom of the lake was muddy.
