40Ar-39Ar incremental heating studies on the Tudor Gabbro, Grenville Province, Ontario: its bearing on the North American apparent polar wander path in late Proterozoic times

Abstract: Summary. 40Ar‐39Ar incremental heating studies have been carried out on samples taken from the Tudor Gabbro, Grenville Province, Ontario. In an earlier K‐Ar study, these rocks have yielded an isochron age of ∼700 Ma together with very high initial argon ratios. Age spectrum plots on whole‐rock samples, in general, display a saddle‐shaped character, with two of them exhibiting minima close to 700 Ma. No clear plateaus are observed for these rocks. A hornblende separate records the time ∼1110 Ma at which the st… Show more

“…The plateau segment for the Elzevir microclines, with an age range of 720-760 Ma, is broadly consistent with microcline and plagioclase dates from the Haliburton Highlands and the Thanet and Tudor gabbros York 1981a, 1981b;Baksi 1982), which were used to infer slow cooling (as their preferred model). The convex-upwards nature of the Elsevir spectra to the plateau region can be best modelled (Turner 1968) by 5% (ESC-22) to 10% (ESC-49) argon loss at Ca.…”

“…The 40Ar/39Ar data we have acquired for muscovite, microcline, and plagioclase from the Elzevir and Bark Lake plutons complement the hornblende and biotite data of LopezMartinez (1982) for the Elzevir and the data from the Haliburton Highlands and Hastings Basin York 1981a, 1981b;Lopez-Martinez and York 1983;Baksi 1982). In this section, these data will be used, in conjunction with other geochronology and geological relationships, to place limits on the thermal history of the eastern Elzevir terrane and also to reassess the earlier work on the region to the West.…”

“…Its metamorphic grade is the lowest found anywhere in the Grenville. Garnet-pyroxene geothermometry [Anovitz and Essene, 1990] [Baksi, 1982]. A also cannot be, even in part, a laboratoryacquired CRM or TCRM because of the sharp segregation of its blocking temperatures above 520-530øC and because the NRM direction remains unchanged, although fields are applied at large angles to A to produce pTRM.…”
