[60]Fullerene for Medicinal Purposes, A Purity Criterion towards Regulatory Considerations

Abstract: Since the early nineties countless publications have reported promising medicinal applications for [60]fullerene (C60) related to its unparalleled affinity towards free radicals. Yet, until now no officially approved C60-based drug has reached the market, notably because of the alleged dangers of C60. Nevertheless, since the publication of the effects of C60 on the lifespan of rodents, a myriad of companies started selling C60 worldwide for human consumption without any approved clinical trial. Nowadays, sever… Show more

“…The method is based on transferring C 60 fullerenes from organic solution into the aqueous phase by ultrasonic treatment. The purity of the prepared C 60 FAS (i.e., the presence/absence of any residual impurities such as carbon black and toluene phase) was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and GC/MS analysis (Keykhosravi et al, 2019). The state of C 60 fullerene in aqueous solution was monitored using atomic force microscopy (AFM "Solver Pro M" system, NT-MDT, Russia) as well as the dynamic light scattering (DLS) method (Zetasizer Nano-ZS90, Malvern, Worcestershire, UK) at room temperature.…”

“…13 Therefore, C60 is informally sold as a "health food" ingredient in the United States and the European Union. 14 C60 dissolved in olive oil functions as a very strong antioxidant and has a therapeutic effect on inflammatory skin diseases, cancers, and intestinal diseases. [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18] The authors of this study discovered that cosmetic-grade C60 dissolved in grape seed oil could quickly and noticeably relieve skin itching and pain in muscles, tendons, and joints when applied and massaged on the skin (patent applied for 19 ).…”

“…Extensive research into the use of carbon materials in biological and biomedical studies has been carried out for several years. These materials include carbon nanotubes, 1,2 fullerene, 3 graphene, graphene derivatives, particularly graphene oxide (GO) and reduced GO. [4][5][6][7] GO is currently being tested in engineered tissue, [8][9][10] implants, 11 diagnostic tools and chips, enhancing biological images, 12 drug-delivery carriers, 13 bone regeneration, 14 and antibacterial materials.…”
