“…The efficacy of RU 486 for cervical ripening and labor induction in the mid [3] or third [4,5] trimesters of pregnancy with live or dead fetuses has been reported [6]. We chose to associate RU 486 with prostaglandins in order to lower the doses of prostaglandins and minimize side effects [7], The combi nation of a laminaria tent with a prostaglandin E analogue has been reported to be effective in the midtrimester [7], Atienza et al [ 1 ] found only a modest effect on the course of abortion in cases of previous cesarean section when using a laminaria tent before amnioinfusions of prosta glandins. Our 13 % frequency of cesarean section for failed cervical dilatation reflects an excessive morbidity in comparison to that reported by Atienza et al [ 1 ].…”

“…Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and its analogues have been used therapeutically for their stimulant actions on the pregnant human uterus for some 25 years (Bygdeman et al, 1968;Bygdeman, 1990). The work of Senior and colleagues (1993) clearly indicates that PGE analogues contract human myometrial smooth muscle by activating prostanoid EP3receptors.…”
