Some of the reduction is simply associated with the effect of lowered light intensity on net photosynthesis, but alterations in the photosynthetic apparatus including a decline in electron transport chain constituents and carboxylation enzymes in comparison to plants grown in the sun are likely to be even more important (Boardman 1977).
