“…In contrast to planktivore and herbivore groups, the invertivore fish assemblage of both natives and invaders (i.e., mostly common carp), was less biomass-dense than what might be expected for a large, benthos-dominated river. The dams and high sediment load of the lower Illinois River mainstem likely reduced benthic invertebrates 25 and favored planktivorous fishes over invertivorous ones. The consistent pattern of more efficient use of energy by invasive invertivores over native invertivores suggests a potential competitive benefit despite environmentally driven limits on biomass achieved within this trophic group.…”

“…Most wetland backwater areas in the river are isolated from the mainstem by a system of levees. Wetlands that are connected are threatened by high silt and organic matter settling out from suspended river bedload 25 . In contrast to the Alton and LaGrange Pools, Peoria Pool contains extensive lake-like areas that are adjacent and connected to the thalweg (Figure 1).…”

“…Reference sites of the two basins were prominently located in riffles and undercut banks of stone substrates with subsequent waters of high DO and lower nutrient levels compared to fine substrate (gravel, sand and mud) of monitoring sites. These fine substrates contain loose sediments and decomposed organic matter of low DO, as a result, support only tolerant macroinvertebrate communities (Koel and Stevenson, 2002) compared to those accommodated by stone substrates. Heptageniidae and Baetidae (Ephemeroptera), Chironomidae (Diptera) and Hydropsychidae (Trichoptera) for example, can survive under serious environmental stresses with low DO waters because of their ability to oxidize mud on the river bottom and produce haemoglobin (Ikonomov, 1963;Simic, 1999;Paunovic et al, 2007).…”
