Abstract: The syntheses of novel octa-and tetra-substituted systems based on tetrabenz[a,c,h,j]anthracene are reported. The disc-shaped octa-substituted material exhibits a columnar mesophase, whereas the tetra-substituted material exhibits a lamellar phase. Binary mixtures of the two materials were examined in order to explore the change over from discotic to calamitic behaviour as a function of concentration. At the crossover point, the possibility of the formation of a biaxial phase was investigated.{Basis of a prese… Show more

“…A related example was reported by Toyne, Goodby, and co‐workers (Scheme ) 287. 288 Only the octasubstituted board‐like mesogen 206 b forms columnar mesophases, while the tetrasubstituted analogue 206 a displays a soft crystal phase (Scheme ).…”

“…All the intermediates,a nd the target compounds have been fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy (Figures S1-S14 in the Supporting Information) and HRMS (Figures S15-S21 in the Supporting Information), and the resultsa re in good agreement with the chemical structures.N op ositional isomers were observed, otherwise different from the reportedp henomena. [48] Molecularc onformation and aggregation in organic solvents Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons usually tend to aggregate in organic solvents as ar esult of strong intermoleculari nteractions, which depend essentially on the size and planarity of the aromatic core. The synthesized fused-thiophened iscotic compounds described here possess these features and therefore were expectedt os trongly aggregate in solution.…”

“…However, despite researchers trying to make this prediction real, the discovery of a Nb phase in thermotropic liquid crystals has remained elusive [2]. Functional shape persistent macrocycles with defined structures play a special role in supramolecular chemistry [3].…”
