A 2.7 V DECT RF transceiver with integrated VCO

Abstract: Digitally-enhanced cordless telephone (DECT) is a standard for residential cordless telephony and wireless local loop. Components for this market must be low-cost and highly-integrated. Figure 1 shows the block diagram of the DECT radio frequency integrated circuit (RFIC). This IC, combined with an IFIC, baseband converter, low-noise amplifier, and power amplifier form the basis for a DECT telephone. The RFIC is fabricated on a highspeed (25GHz f,) bipolar process [l].The radio frequency (RF) architecture incl… Show more

“…Design reviews should be a game of wits, where the designer prepares … an impenetrable defense and the reviewers make a tactical attack prepared to expose any weaknesses. Recently, I revisited a publication of which Brokaw is coauthor [10] that bears on some of my recent research on a long-standing problem in radio frequency circuits: What is the mechanism that upconverts flicker noise in the transistors of an oscillator? Over the years, numerous causes have been hypothesized, but none of them has yet led to a cure by design.…”

“…Accordingly, in Section III of this paper we present a basic topology, dubbed the MICROMIXER for reference purposes [2], [3]. It follows the general form of the Gilbert mixer, except for the use of a bisymmetric Class-AB RF stage.…”

“…The balanced VCO circuit is similar in design to that described in [6]. It operates at twice the required LO frequency to minimizes pulling effects and allow generation of "coarse quadrature" signals at the LO frequency using a pair of latches clocked in anti-phase.…”
