High throughput and ultra low latency are the main requirements for fifth generation (5G) mobile broadband communications. Densely populated urban environments require utilization of previously underutilized millimeter wave frequency spectrum for higher data rates. The Ka-band, previously used in satellite applications, is of particular interest to terrestrial 5G mobile networks. New radio solutions are required for these frequencies, such as multiple wireless base stations organized in small cells and highly directional antennas to compensate for higher path loss. Wireless backhaul is predicted to be the most cost-effective and versatile solution to connect 5G base stations to the core network. Wireless backhaul enables flexible and easy installation of 5G base stations in ad hoc networks, supporting large crowd gatherings such as concerts and sports events. In this article, we present an architecture of a wireless backhaul transceiver, which operates on the 26.5-29.5-GHz band. The architecture described in this paper was implemented, and the performance of the receiver (Rx) array has been measured. We also present over-the-air antenna array measurement results using the Rx. The measurement results show that unequal Rx channel gains and antenna gains do not have a significant effect on the shape of the main lobe of the radiation pattern. We have measured a coherence gain of 2.7 dB from two Rx channels that is close to the theoretical value of 3.0 dB. We have achieved a conducted Rx EVM of better than 2% using a 100-MHz 16-QAM modulated signal at 26.5 GHz.

Owing to the rapid growth in wireless data traffic, millimeter-wave (mm-wave) communications have shown tremendous promise and are considered an attractive technique in fifth-generation (5G) wireless communication systems. However, to design robust communication systems, it is important to understand the channel dynamics with respect to space and time at these frequencies. Millimeter-wave signals are highly susceptible to blocking, and they have communication limitations owing to their poor signal attenuation compared with microwave signals. Therefore, by employing highly directional antennas, co-channel interference to or from other systems can be alleviated using line-of-sight (LOS) propagation. Because of the ability to shape, switch, or scan the propagating beam, phased arrays play an important role in advanced wireless communication systems. Beam-switching, beam-scanning, and multibeam arrays can be realized at mm-wave frequencies using analog or digital system architectures. This review article presents state-of-the-art phased arrays for mm-wave mobile terminals (MSs) and base stations (BSs), with an emphasis on beamforming arrays. We also discuss challenges and strategies used to address unfavorable path loss and blockage issues related to mm-wave applications, which sets future directions.

End-Fire Vivaldi Antenna Array With Wide Fan-Beam for 5G Mobile Handsets

In this paper, we present a portable end-fire antenna array design for the fifth-generation (5G) mobile handsets that exploits a Vivaldi antenna and shows a wide fan-beam on the elevation plane. We make the proposed antenna array more efficient by printing on a 10-layer printed circuit board (PCB) lamination in a vertical direction of the ground plane edge. Using the proposed Vivaldi antenna array design, the radiation characteristics of 4×1 linear arrays are fabricated. To validate the feasibility, we perform simulations and experiments. Simulation results show that the total efficiencies of the antenna array are higher than about 8.16-9.46 dBi for the scanning range between 0° to 60°. Measurement results display that the antenna has S11 reply less than-10 dB in the frequency area of 27.5 to 28.5 GHz and wide beamwidth (130.8° in azimuth plan, 21.35° in elevation plan). There is a high accord between the calculated and measured results and we consider that the results in this study can be well achieved by designers who design the wide width high-speed antennas of 5G mobile terminals.
