A 3D virtual Weft‐knitting Engineering learning system based on Unreal Engine 4

Abstract: The traditional practice teaching mode of Weft‐knitting Engineering leads to unsatisfactory teaching outcomes due to the lack of hardware in laboratory and security issue in knitting mill. This paper presents a 3D virtual Weft‐knitting Engineering learning system based on Unreal Engine 4. The technological design of weft‐knitted fabrics including automatic design of jacquard pattern and the transformation of jacquard pattern, knitting notation, needle set‐out, and cams arrangement is realized through the estab… Show more

“…VLE allowed the students to visualize the various signals generated by the function generator and also enable them to change the signal parameters in the VR environment by rotating the appropriate knobs of 3D models. It has strengthened students' intuitive understanding of laboratory hardware and encouraged them to operate the equipment [35]. Researchers have suggested that virtual or remote laboratories are not appropriate for students as it takes away the real practical experience of students, and students did not get a chance to operate the real hardware equipment [19,23].…”

“…The VR system focuses on teaching data structures and sorting algorithms to students using the VR headset. Zhang et al [35] designed a 3D virtual learning system for weft‐knitting engineering. The virtual learning system aims to provide a complete understanding and usability of weft‐knitting training from machine structure.…”

“…During the experiments, the time costs of the participants were recorded using the blueprint function of UE4 (written in C++) (cf., Zhang et al, 2018 ). Specifically, the decision area was a transparent “box trigger” with an added timer function, and two commands were given (cf., Supplementary Figure 5 ) as follows: (1) The timer started running when the pathfinder entered the decision area by touching the edge of the trigger for the first time.…”
