A 60 GHz ultra low-power wake-up radio

Abstract: This work presents an ultra low-power dutycycled wake-up radio system for high-data-rate, short-range millimeter-wave WPAN applications. The asynchronous dutycycled wake-up power management method is proposed and optimized to reduce the average power consumption. As the design example, a 60 GHz radio system is discussed, which consists of a 4-path phase-array transceiver, a duty-cycled wake-up receiver and the digital control circuits. Theoretical analyses of the optimum duty-cycle factor towards minimum avera… Show more

“…Recalling (8), the following analyses can be made: for a better EFOM, (1) smaller τ C is preferred, which in turn reflecting to the network configuration, means that the communication distance of the each node should be kept small and data forwarding time should be minimized. As a result, the self-configured ad hoc network with multi-hop routing would be a reasonable choice; (2) t on /t tot , t Rx,overhead and P pr have to be minimized, which implies that in the MAC layer, the duty-cycle should be sufficiently low and the settling of the nodes should be fast, especially for short packages.…”

“…On-off-keying (OOK) modulation is used to reduce the system complexity as well as the power consumption [8]. However, since OOK modulation is vulnerable to interference and has a relatively poor E b /N 0 , the improvement of the k factor is not significant.…”

“…Almost all the reported WuRxs use frequency bands lower than 2.4 GHz and exclude clock and data recovery circuits [2]- [8]. Although Li et al presented a wake-up radio system for millimeter-wave wireless personal area network (WPAN) applications [9], they investigated system architectures and presented only simulation results. We report an ultra-low power 60-GHzband WuRx including a clock and data recovery circuit designed and fabricated with a 0.18-m RF CMOS process.…”

“…To achieve relatively high date rates, a WuRx operating in millimeter-wave band (60 GHz) for short-range applications is proposed in [69]. This duty cycled WuR consists of a 4path phase array transmitter and a 4-path receiver.…”

“…Thanks to its high 1582 data rate and low power consumption, these WuR utilized 1583 as main data radio can have an advantage over duty cycled 1584 transceiver in terms of reducing the overall communica-1585 tion delay. One of the prototypes in the millimeter-wave 1586 band operating at 60 GHz based on OOK modulation has 1587 been designed to achieve very high data rate of up to 1588 1 Gbps [69], however, it may not be applicable for WBAN 1589 due to its high power consumption of 230 µW. However, 1590 this makes it suitable for wireless personal area network 1591 applications that demand short-range of up to 0.2 m with high 1592 data rate.…”
