A bibliometric analysis of COVID-19 publications in neurology by using the visual mapping method

Abstract: BackgroundThe characteristic symptom of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is respiratory distress, but neurological symptoms are the most frequent extra-pulmonary symptoms. This study aims to explore the current status and hot topics of neurology-related research on COVID-19 using bibliometric analysis.MethodsPublications regarding neurology and COVID-19 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) on March 28 2022. The Advanced search was conducted using “TS = (‘COVID 19’ or ‘Novel Coronav… Show more

“…The cumulative time zones of the keywords were mapped using COOC, and Figure 9 shows the top 15 high-frequency keywords for 2020-2022. The graph provides an overall picture of changes in the study path (65)(66)(67)(68). The size of the circles next to the keywords represents the number of keyword occurrences.…”

“…Third, citation counts were used as an important indicator to evaluate the quality, and the influence of publications is still controversial because the journal impact factor, H-index, mquotient, and authorship value also provide a good reference value (8). Fourth, we included only English publications in this survey.…”

“…Thus, it is important to find the key publications and understand the state-of-the-art techniques in this field. Bibliometric analysis is used to analyze the current status and frontier topics in this field (8)(9)(10). Previous studies explored the trend of animal models used for Alzheimer's disease (11) and scoliosis (12).…”

“…Bibliometric analysis is a big data-based scientific mapping method used to investigate the key contributors (e.g., country, institution, author, and journal) and identify the collaborative network between them in a given field. Additionally, it can identify the main Frontier research topics ( Zhang et al, 2022a ; Zhang et al, 2022b ). Several tools, such as CiteSpace and VOSviewer, are popularly used for bibliometric analysis, primarily to explore the potential relationships between the published literatures and assess progress made in a particular field ( Zhang et al, 2022a ).…”

Several tools, such as CiteSpace and VOSviewer, are popularly used for bibliometric analysis, primarily to explore the potential relationships between the published literatures and assess progress made in a particular field ( Zhang et al, 2022a ). Over the years, these two bibliometric tools have been widely used to predict hot topics and future research trends in several medical domains, such as cardiovascular diseases, ARDS, sepsis, host immune response, etc., ( Chen, 2006 ; Avcu et al, 2015 ; Perianes-Rodriguez et al, 2016 ; Yao et al, 2020 ; Ma et al, 2021 ).…”
