A Biomechanical Comparison of Allograft Tendons for Ligament Reconstruction

Abstract: The results of this study should encourage surgeons to use these soft tissue allografts interchangeably, which is important as the number of ligament reconstructions performed with allografts continues to rise.

“…Following ethical approval, 68 peroneus longus (PL) chemically treated and non-irradiated (BioClense, RTI Surgical, Alachua, Florida, USA) allograft tendons were obtained and assigned to test groups ( Figure 1); they were stored at -20 o C before use. These tendons were available for testing, and their mechanical properties do not differ from those of other hamstrings tendons [25].…”

“…Data has not reported any adverse effects, such as graft degeneration, increased laxity, or a change in functional outcome at short-to medium-term follow-up 16,30,31 . Experience from spinal surgery has not shown any negative consequences from vancomycin use 17,32 .…”

“…As discussed previously, a variety of fresh-frozen allograft options exist such as patellar tendon, tibialis anterior or posterior tendons, HS tendons, peroneal tendons, iliotibial band, and Achilles tendon. 9 An example of a prepared Achilles tendon allograft for ACLR is shown in Figure 1 , D. This graft is prepped long so that it can be used for LET if needed. The main advantages of allografts over autografts are shorter surgical times, predictable graft size, no harvest site morbidity, and easier recovery in the immediate postoperative period.…”
