A Brief Sensitive Screening Instrument for Depression in Late Life

Abstract: Data collected with the depression scale (DEP) of the Brief Assessment Scale (BAS) at interviews with 811 elderly subjects were analysed to determine which of its 21 individual items could be selected to produce a short screening scale for depression which would have less than 10 items and a Cronbach's alpha above 0.8. Eight items which fulfilled these requirements were selected to form the Even Briefer Assessment Scale for Depression (EBAS DEP). The validity of the scale was assessed against psychiatric diagn… Show more

“…The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated using the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease Study equation, with an eGFR <60 ml min −1 1.73 m −2 defining renal impairment [18]. Depression was assessed using the Even Briefer Assessment Scale for Depression [19]. Basic and instrumental activities of daily living (telephone use, transport, financial affairs, managing medications) were recorded.…”

“…Peripheral arterial disease was considered present when the ABI was Յ0.90 (worse side) or there had been a diabetes-related lower-extremity amputation (15). Depression was assessed using the Even Briefer Assessment Scale for Depression (16). A history of hypoglycemia was assessed by self-report at initial recruitment (frequency), and questions on severe hypoglycemia (hospitalization or unconsciousness, frequency, and timing) were included at the time of cognitive assessment.…”

“…For this reason, several efforts have been made to develop self-report screening inventories that would improve the accuracy of detection of depressive symptoms and yet be brief enough for routine administration to the medically ill. Although these measures have generally been found to correlate highly with full-length depression inventories (1)(2)(3)(4), in some cases their concordance with a standard from clinician-administered interviews has been less than optimal (5). Recently, Mahoney et al (6) reported preliminary evidence that a single-item interview for depression was as accurate as the 30-item Geriatric Depression Scale (7) in identifying depressive disorders in older adults.…”
