A broadband circularly polarized slot antenna with a compact microstrip to CPW transition

Abstract: A simple structure of broadband circularly polarized slot antenna based on coplanar waveguide (CPW) feeding is proposed in this article. To obtain circular polarization with a single feed, a transition from microstrip to CPW is designed to excite the even and odd modes of the CPW simultaneously. By adjusting the relative position and dimensions of the two circular patches introduced at the end of microstrip line and CPW, a 90° phase difference between two modes can be produced. When the two modes are coupled i… Show more

“…Mode pattern responsible for dual polarization performance of proposed antenna is studied under this section. Mode suppression techniques to achieve dual polarization are reported in different antennas such as Dielectric Resonator Antennas fed by two pairs of differential probes, Reflector Antennas fed by multi‐port circular waveguide and offset reflector antenna with dual ports .…”

“…In the literature, many multiband CP planar antennas have been reported, 1‐6 but their 3‐dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidths are generally narrower than several hundred MHz. In order to realize wideband or even broadband CP, two types of antennas are generally used, that are, planar wide‐slot antennas 7‐13 and planar monopole antennas 14‐20 . In Reference 7, a coplanar waveguide‐fed broadband CP square slot antenna was proposed, the 3‐dB AR bandwidth is about 60%.…”

“…In addition, the 3D DRA structure will increase the design freedom, making it more flexible in realizing circularly polarized (CP) radiations. Moreover, the CP antennas have some advantages such as anti‐multipath effect and polarization mismatch reduction, which can reduce the polarization losses compared with the linearly polarized (LP) antenna . Thus, the research on CP DRAs becomes a hotspot .…”
