A Card Game Description Language

Abstract: Abstract. We present initial research regarding a system capable of generating novel card games. We furthermore propose a method for computationally analysing existing games of the same genre. Ultimately, we present a formalisation of card game rules, and a context-free grammar G cardgame capable of expressing the rules of a large variety of card games. Example derivations are given for the poker variant Texas hold 'em, Blackjack and UNO. Stochastic simulations are used both to verify the implementation of the… Show more

“…We envisage using VGDL as the basis for this since it provides an elegant way to describe both game levels and game rules. This track will provide a new avenue for research in the area, building on previous work [30], [18], [16], [17]. More specifically, there has already been initial work on exploring the playability of randomly generated VGDL games [31].…”

“…Other authors have developed other GDLs, for other domains of games and/or at a higher level of abstraction (and therefore more compact). Such languages include the Ludi language for combinatorial board games [16] and the Card Game Description Language [17]. An overview of GDLs and other representations for game rules and mechanics can be found in [18].…”

“…Game description languages are a descriptive languages that is used to define certain type/category of games. There are game description languages suited for defining board games [6], [7], card games [8], videogames [9], puzzle games [10], strategy games [11], and so on. Having a more focused language helps the generator find good games.…”

“…Collins [26] introduced to procedural music in video games, exploring several approaches to procedural composition that had been used in the past. Font et al [27] presented initial research towards a system that is able to create the rules for different card games. The authors of [28] developed a prototype of a tool that automatically produces design pattern specifications for missions and quests for the role-playing game Neverwinter Nights.…”
