A Case ofArcanobacterium haemolyticumBacteremia and Osteomyelitis Diagnosed by 16s rRNA Sequencing

Abstract: Arcanobacterium haemolyticum is a catalase-negative, aerobic gram-positive rod. It causes pharyngitis, skin and soft tissue infection, osteomyelitis, endocarditis, meningitis, pneumonia, and septicemia. We experienced a case of A. haemolyticum bacteremia and osteomyelitis in a diabetic patient. The organism was misidentified as Cellulomonas species by automated system but correctly identified as A. haemolyticum by 16s rRNA sequencing.

“…In addition, the CAMP inhibition and reverse CAMP tests using Streptococcus agalactiae were positive. Several previous studies have confused CAMP inhibition (β-haemolysis inhibition) with reverse CAMP (β-haemolysis enhancement) ( Kim et al , 2004 ; Bae et al , 2010 ).…”

“…Szacuje się, że nawet 0,5-2,5% przypadków zapalenia gardła może być wywołanych przez ten gatunek, a w 20-50% przypadków zapalenia gardła o tej etiologii występuje wysypka [32,40]. Rzadziej bakterie te mogą wywoływać zapalenie kości [5,50], martwicze zapalenie powięzi [44,50], zapalenie skóry, tkanek miękkich i tkanki łącznej [23,36]. Bakterie te zazwyczaj pozostają wrażliwe na antybiotyki takie jak: penicyliny, cefalosporyny, karbapenemy, makrolidy, fluororchinolony, tetracykliny, rifampicynę i wankomycynę.…”

“…It is estimated that even 0.5-2.5% of the cases of pharyngitis can be induced by this species, and 20-50% of the cases of pharyngitis with this aetiology are accompanied by a rash [32,40]. Less often, these bacteria can cause osteoarthritis [5,50], necrotizing fasciitis [44,50], dermatitis, inflammation of the soft tissue and connective tissue [23,36]. These bacteria usually remain sensitive to antibiotics such as penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems, macrolides, fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines, rifampicin and vancomycin.…”
