A case of sarcomatoid carcinoma of the skin

Abstract: We describe the histological and immunocytochemical findings of an exophytic cutaneous tumour with mixed features of atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC). A 73-year-old woman presented with a rapidly growing tumour measuring 35 mm in diameter and 10 mm in height on the left forearm. The tumour was excised and histology revealed a biphasic tumour with a pleomorphic spindle cell component and an associated tumour composed of discrete islands of atypical basaloid cells with peripheral palis… Show more

“…In most other cutaneous sarcomatoid carcinomas, however, specific lines of mesenchymal differentiation are not identified and the sarcomatous component resembles atypical fibroxanthoma or high-grade pleomorphic sarcoma. 3,6,14,16,18,19,23,26,33,44 We described some histological findings that have not been reported in the previously published cases of cutaneous sarcomatoid carcinomas. Three of our tumors had predominant malignant giant cell tumor-like tumor components.…”

“…The mesenchymal components include pleomorphic sarcoma (undifferentiated sarcoma), atypical fibroxanthoma or osteosarcoma. This feature is evaluated as a biphasic tumor and named as carcinosarcoma by many authors (5). The presence of epithelial and mesenchymal components in histological and immunohistochemical evaluation are diagnostic ( Figure 6).…”
