A Census of Baryons in Galaxy Clusters and Groups

Abstract: We determine the contribution of stars in galaxies, intracluster stars, and the intracluster medium to the total baryon budget in nearby galaxy clusters and groups. We find that the baryon mass fraction ( f b b / m ) within r 500 is constant for systems with M 500 between 6 ; 10 13 and 1 ; 10 15 M . Although f b is lower than the WMAP value, the shortfall is on the order of both the observational systematic uncertainties and the depletion of baryons within r 500 that is predicted by simulations. The data there… Show more

“…These results appear to be at odds with some observations of the ICL in clusters (e.g. Gonzalez, Zabludoff & Zaritsky 2005;Gonzalez, Zaritsky & Zabludoff 2007), which tend to find significantly lower fractions. However, more recent work by Budzynski et al (2014) suggests that the ICL can contribute as much as 40 per cent to the total stellar mass in clusters.…”

“…Lin & Mohr 2004). Gonzalez, et al (2007) have presented a census of the baryons in local systems with total masses in the range 6 × 10 13 M −10 15 M . Including the ICL luminosity well mapped within 300 kpc, but probably underestimated in the outskirts if there is any significant contribution at larger radii, they found a well defined correlation between the stellar mass fraction and the total mass at Δ = 500 in the form of f cold = (0.009 ± 0.002)(M 500 /10 15 M ) −(0.64±0.13) .…”
